Solitaire: Why Is It Called Solitaire?

Ever wondered how solitaire got its name and how it became one of the most well-known card games in history?

    NetfloristOfferforge

Long before it was introduced as a popular Microsoft game, this card contest was already played centuries before. So, continue reading and you’ll discover lots of fascinating facts surrounding this prominent card game.

    The origin of its name

Solitaire comes from the Latin word “solitarius”, meaning alone or isolated. Its name is closely associated with how the game is played. The game is mainly a one-player game that involves sorting the cards by rank and building card foundations, starting with Ace (often labelled as 1), 2, 3, and so forth.

A collection of its associated names

Many historians label solitaire as a game of patience―literally and figuratively. It’s because this game is a true exercise of patience. The game of patience originally started in the UK, and with such comparison, these two have become interchangeable over the years.

Aside from patience, this card game is also related to cabale, which is a famous game in Scandinavian countries. Cabale is associated with cabal, which is marked as a mystical interpretation of texts.

    Solitaire

On top of this etymology and some of its Solitaire , there’s more to know about solitaire. Let’s take a walk down the memory lane and dig deep into the game. Here, you’ll know how it started and how it evolved over many centuries.

    The chronicles of the game

For some, they may have first encountered it thanks to Microsoft. But really, this game has been around for quite a long time―more than centuries to be exact. The history of the game can be traced back to the 17th century, where it was first noted in a German book of games as a competitive card contest. By then, it was described as a game between two players, where each of them takes turns in playing with a separate deck of cards while bystanders put their own bets.

And in the 18th century, this game rose to fame in European’s Baltic region, where it was conceivably considered as a practice of fortune-telling. With certain similarities, the status of the game escalated together with tarot card reading, divination by cards, and cartomancy. By then, the game has spread across the English society, particularly during the Industrial Revolution, where rural societies were altered into rural ones.

As a result, farming was no longer the key source of the economy. People spent more time in factories, working in various industries. And from there, these workers often used their spare time playing card games. As their leisure time rises, games like this also become more popular and famous.

These card games were not just for the laborers but also for the upper class. Prince Albert of England was one of the royal persons who are known to play this game.

Come mid-19th century, its reputation rose even more, especially among the French societies. And from there, books of rules were created. Because of the growing popularity, solitaire players needed variety, hence the birth of different solitaire games.

    Solitaire at present

With its long-running history, many solitaire games have been introduced. But it was during the 1990s that solitaire skyrocketed and became a hit card game. On May 22, 1990, Microsoft released it as a computer game. Since then, this made solitaire one of the most played and renowned card games in the 20th century.

Now, there are various solitaire games―over a hundred―with each game having little variations in the rules. Some games are played by two or more players, though the most common format is the solitaire being played by only one.

And of course, the solitaire computer games made it more famous. With these online card games, you don’t need to physically shuffle the cards. Instead, you let the computer do its thing while you also do your own moves to win the game. And of course, because of the wonders of technology, you can easily start a new game with just a click of the mouse. Some even provide undo options and hints for more chances of winning!

    The main rules of solitaire

Even with the tweaks in the rules over time, solitaire has always been noted as a single-player game. Whether you play it online or offline, the main guidelines remain the same. As a general rule, you need a deck of standard 52-cards to form four piles of cards, with each foundation having one card in ascending rank.

And if you haven’t tried playing it, you better try it now! The rules above aren’t that difficult, though you shouldn’t underestimate the game itself because it’s quite tricky. Focus and patience are ultimately needed when you play this card game. For those who want to taste their first-ever solitaire victory, download the Solitaire Masters game.
