Coelecanth are one of those bands that you should NOT miss at Mieliepop 2016. I saw these blokes live for the first time at STRAB in 2014 and I have to say that they completely blew me away. I suppose that’s what happens when you put musicians like Andre Kriel (The Black Cat Bones), Gareth Wilson (Southern Gypsey Queen) and Jaco Mans on one stage. This three piece is oozing with musical talent and it’s evident in their music.
I had a little chat with Gareth Wilson from Coelacanth a while ago. This is what he had to say about Mieliepop and a few other things.
What comes to mind when you think of Mieliepop Festival?
A ridiculously beautiful place.
What can music fans expect from your set at Mieliepop 2016?
Expect three very good friends playing what we consider to be good music, to a whole bunch of other friends drinking and having a good time on the other end of the stage and hopefully they also consider what we are playing to be good music. We really don’t like to overthink or oversell what we do, Coelacanth is about connecting with ourselves and the audience. We aren’t re-inventing the wheel but we do know how to boogie.
What is currently playing on your iPod / CD Player / Music Streaming service that you use?
Right now Run the jewels, Hank Williams and Herbie Hancock are on shuffle. Yip our tastes vary somewhat during the course of the day.
If someone asks you to describe Coelacanth’s music, what would you say?
Outlaw folk.
If one looks under “Rock ‘n Roll” in the dictionary, whose name should be there and why?
Andre Kriel (I’m doing this interview and Andre isn’t such a big doos).
I’d like to thank Gareth Wilson and Coelacanth for taking time to answer my questions and wish them all the best with their set at Mieliepop 2016 (which is taken place from the 18th to the 20th of March).
