Park Acoustics: An interview with Bad Peter

Bad Peter are of the acts who will be performing at this weekend’s edition of Park Acoustics in Pretoria. This acoustic duo has been making waves in the SA Music scene over the last few years.

I recently had a to chat to them about this weekend’s edition of Park Acoustics and a few other things. This is what Bad Peter had to say…

    What exactly makes Peter Bad?

Haha!  Well technically Peter (Alwyn Petrus Bekker) is playing music with Bad (PG Badenhorst), that makes us, “Bad Peter.”

What have you guys been up to lately?

Playing music of course!  We’ve been working on new songs as well, we hope to record a new EP somewhere this year.  We’ve also confirmed some awesome events for the rest of the year:  Park Acoustics, STRAB (Mozambique), Capital Craft Beerfest, Splashy Fen, Lowveld Gin Festival, Tequila Fest, Innibos etc.

    Bad Peter at Railways

What do you think of the standard of music that’s being played on commercial radio stations in South Africa?

Radio, sometimes it seems like another music scene altogether!  Most radio stations only play music that’s “radio friendly”, and that turns out to be mostly electronic and pop songs with a fair amount of production done on them.  We’d love to see more support from commercial radio stations for local up and coming acts like ourselves, but we’re definitely not holding our breath for radio play.

We’re doing things old school by building our own following independent of commercial radio by playing as many shows in as many places as we can.  This route might take a bit longer, but we believe it to be the more sustainable. And since we’re here to stay, we don’t mind taking the industry on song by song, show by show.

If you could put together a super group of South African musicians, which 5 should be on that list?

Nathan Smith on guitar, Schalk Joubert on bass, Mike Hardy (from Bed on Bricks) on vocals and sax, Sam “Drumbo” Shoai (from Tidal Waves) on drums and Riaan van Rensburg on percussion.

What are your thoughts about Park Acoustics?

From a musician’s point of view, the absolute best gig in Pretoria.  From a music lover’s point of view, the best monthly event to attend in Gauteng!

    Bad Peter

What can we expect from Bad Peter at the next edition of Park Acoustics on 31 March?

We’ll be jamming our songs as best we can.  We’ll also throw in a new tune or two!  Park Acoustics is a highlight of our year, so we can’t wait!

I’d like to thank Bad Peter for this interview and I wish them all of the best with this weekend’s performance at Park Acoustics and their future musical adventures.
