Its the Regulation of Interception of Communications Act (and Provision of Communication-Related Information Act). All current and new contract, top-up and prepaid customers are required to register their SIM cards. Subscribers who have activated their cellphone numbers before the 1st of July 2009 have to register their personal details against that cellphone number / SIM card in order to comply.…

The Vodacom Player 23 advert was released earlier in 2009 and introduces the South African public to Jan (Malcolm Ferreira) the South African rugby supporter or Player 23. The advert also features South African musician Robbie Wessels. This is definitely one of the best adverts so far of the year. I’m sure that this is one of those adverts that Vodacom can follow up with another with the same theme. As part of their rugby union sponsorship portfolio, Vodacom has been the title sponsor of the Super Rugby tournament in South Africa since 1996. In football, they sponsor two clubs in the Premier…

Today I’m featuring the 3 most annoying World of Warcraft mobs. I’ve been playing the game for the past 3 years and over the years, there have been really irritating creatures & humanoids in the game who always tend to attack your character when he / she really does not need to be attacked. I recently started levelling a new character on a new realm so I’ve had the pleasure of experiencing them once again. These World of Warcraft mobs have really pissed me off: 3. Murlocs These irritating little humanoids are found in a few areas in World of Warcraft…

Today I’m showcasing a Vodacom TV advert featuring Vernon Koekemoer. Vernon Koekemoer (aka Cassie Booyse) became famous when a photo of him attending a rave in Johannesburg was posted on the internet. Since then he’s appeared in various adverts on TV in South Africa. Cassie is a South African bodybuilding enthusiast. He’s similar to alpha male icons in other cultures like America’s Chuck Norris or Kenya’s Makmende and has inspired a variety of derivatives and tributes, from photoshopped images and parody films to websites and T-shirts. Vodacom is the biggest mobile phone operator in South Africa (with more than 20…

Democratic Presidential candidate, Barrack Obama beat the Republican candidate, John McCain earlier this week in the US Presidential Election. He will be sworn in as the 44th US President in January 2009. Obama will make history by becoming the first ever Black president of the United States. His tagline for this year’s election campaign has been “Change”. Being South African and not part of the American population, I’m still bombarded by reports on the internet and on television (or propaganda if you will) which is about what is happening in the US. I’m just wondering how big this “Change” Obama…

Here we go again. This is not the first time that there have been attempts to remove the Springbok emblem from South African Sport. Butana Komphela (Sports Portfolio Committee Chairman) told delegates at a 2 day National Sports Indaba in Durban, South Africa that “The Springbok divides us. We have a responsibility to unite our country on one national emblem”. This is absolutely ridiculous. South Africa has been a democracy for the past 14 years and the emblem is not a dividing factor. The Springboks won the World Cup in 1995 in South Africa and in 2007 in France wearing…

Today I’m featuring the Castle Lager Warcry advert. It’s truly an advert that makes me feel proudly South African. One thing is for sure, South Africans love their Sport, particularly Rugby, Football and Cricket (in no particular order of popularity). Rugby supporters definitely have something to smile about. The Springboks won the Rugby World Cup last year. Castle Lager is the best selling beer brand in South Africa. This beer is the product of one of the largest breweries on this earth, SAB Miller. Castle Lager was first brewed in 1895. It has remained constant as a local favorite since…

On Monday this week, the 18th of August, in Krugersdorp, South Africa, a 18 yr old killed one of his 16 yr old classmates and injured 3 others people at his school in a Ninja-style Samurai Sword attack. This has been all over the news this week. He wore a mask, apparently very similar to the one the heavy metal band Slipknot wear. The ‘Satanic’ band have been blamed for the attack. Lets face it, Slipknot is not everyone’s cup of tea, but this is not the first time the blame for something violent has been directed onto musicians. This…
