For over three decades, the Cape Town International Kite Festival has transformed the city’s skies into a vibrant symbol of hope, resilience, and human connection.
Returning for its 32nd year on 24 and 25 October 2026 at the Youngsfield Military Base in Ottery, the beloved event will once again bring thousands together to support mental health awareness and the life-changing work of Cape Mental Health.

A Powerful Purpose Beyond the Colours
Since its launch in 1994, the event has grown into Africa’s oldest kite festival and one of South Africa’s most recognized mental health awareness platforms.
Beyond the spectacular displays and family-friendly atmosphere lies a deeply important mission: breaking down the stigma surrounding mental health, encouraging help-seeking behavior, and reminding vulnerable individuals that they do not have to face their challenges alone.
This year’s theme, #ColourTheSky, celebrates the power of connection. It serves as a reminder that just as every kite adds its own unique splash of color to the skyline, every act of kindness, understanding, and support can help brighten someone’s world.
Overriding Darkness with Optimism
According to Professor Ingrid Daniels, CEO of Cape Mental Health, the festival provides a beautiful opportunity to brighten the sky with messages of hope and celebrate the bravery of those living with mental health conditions.
The theme captures the visual spectacle and emotional energy of the weekend. Bright colors naturally trigger feelings of joy and positivity, acting as a great neutralizer against dark attitudes, stigma, and harmful misconceptions. Seeing kites soar against gusty winds is a powerful metaphor for overcoming adversity and finding hope in difficult conditions.
The Cape Town International Kite Festival is fun for the Whole Family
For one spectacular weekend, giant kites flown by both local and international kiters will take over the sky, creating a breathtaking display of creativity.
Visitors can look forward to a memorable day outdoors filled with family entertainment, interactive activities, and delicious food vendors.
Most importantly, every ticket purchased and every donation made empowers Cape Mental Health to continue providing essential, free mental health services to vulnerable communities throughout the Western Cape.
