Thousands of geeks flocked to Comic Con 2018 in San Diego, California over the weekend to do a little cosplay, enjoy TV / movie panel discussions and to check out the latest movie and TV trailers.
Every year +/- 165,000 people flock to Comic Con (which is held at the San Diego Convention Centre and various locations around downtown San Diego). This event started out in 1970 as the Golden State Comic Book Convention and holds the Guinness World Record for the largest annual comic and pop culture festival in the world.
Here’s my list of the 5 best movie trailers that were released at Comic Con 2018:
Glass: This movie (which is directed by M. Night Shyamalan) is the third and final installment in the Unbreakable trilogy of movies. It has taken him 20 years to complete this trilogy – the second movie in this trilogy, Split was released in 2016.
Following the conclusion of Split, David Dunn (Bruce Willis) pursues the superhuman persona of Kevin Wendell Crumb (James McAvoy) in a series of escalating encounters while the shadowy presence of Elijah Price (Samuel L. Jackson) emerges as an orchestrator who holds secrets critical to both men. Glass will be released in January 2019.
Shazam!: This film’s trailer had a mixed reaction from people at Comic Con 2018. It’s superhero film based on the DC Comics character of the same name and will be released in April 2019. The film will feature performances by Zachary Levi (who also appeared in 2017’s Thor: Ragnarok), Asher Angel, Mark Strong, Jack Dylan Grazer, Grace Fulton, Ian Chen and others.
DC renamed this character from “Captain Marvel” to “Shazam” in 2012, due in part to Marvel holding the trademark on the name. In the film, a boy is given the ability to become an adult superhero in times of need with a single magic word. The film is directed by David F. Sandberg (who also directed 2017’s Annabelle: Creation).
Aquaman: This film is intended to be the sixth installment in the DC Extended Universe. The film is directed by James Wan (who has also directed two Insidious films and The Conjuring 1 & 2). The film features performances by Jason Momoa, Amber Heard, Willem Dafoe, Patrick Wilson, Dolph Lundgren, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II and Nicole Kidman.
Following the events of Justice League, Arthur Curry, the reluctant ruler of the underwater kingdom of Atlantis, is caught in a battle between surface dwellers that threaten his oceans and his own people, who are ready to lash out and invade the surface. The film will be released in December 2018.
Godzilla – King of the Monsters: This film will be released in May 2019 and is directed and co-written by Michael Dougherty (who wrote and directed 2015’s Krampus). It’s a sequel to 2014’s Godzilla and will be the 35th film in the Godzilla franchise (which started in 1954). The film will feature performances by Kyle Chandler, Vera Farmiga, Millie Bobby Brown (Eleven from Netflix’s Stranger Things).
The new story follows the heroic efforts of the crypto-zoological agency Monarch as its members face off against a battery of god-sized monsters, including the mighty Godzilla, who collides with Mothra, Rodan, and his ultimate nemesis, the three-headed King Ghidorah. When these ancient super-species – thought to be mere myths – rise again, they all vie for supremacy, leaving humanity’s very existence hanging in the balance.
Fantastic Beasts – Crimes of Grindelwald: This film is the sequel to 2016’s Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. It’s also the tenth film in the Wizarding World franchise (which started with the Harry Potter films. This film will be released in November 2018 and will feature performances by Eddie Redmayne, Katherine Waterston, Dan Fogler, Jude Law (who is playing the role of a young Dumbledore), Johnny Depp (who is playing the role of Gellert Grindelwald) and others.
This film is directed by David Yates (who directed the four final Harry Potter films and the screenplay was written by J.K. Rowling. In an effort to thwart Grindelwald‘s plans, Albus Dumbledore enlists his former student Newt Scamander, who agrees to help, unaware of the dangers that lie ahead. Lines are drawn as love and loyalty are tested, even among the truest friends and family, in an increasingly divided wizarding world.

The geek in me is very sad that I couldn’t make it to San Diego Comic Con 2018 this year, but he’s definitely excited about the first ever Comic Con Africa (which is happening in Kyalami in September).
