    An Interview with Dan Patlansky

South African Blues Maestro Dan Patlansky needs no introduction. He’s been making love to people’s eardrums for more than 20 years and to date he’s released no less than 9 studio albums.

    More info about Dan Patlansky

Ever since his debut album, Standing At The Station, followed by his 2004 major label (Blue Note, EMI produced) masterstroke True Blues, Dan Patlansky has been immersing himself in the rich and rollicking world of blues rock music. In February 2005, and again in July 2006, Selwyn Miller, the New Orleans based manager of David Gates, Bread, Randy Crawford and Petula Clark (amongst others), took Patlansky to New Orleans to showcase his outstanding talent. In 2006 Fender acknowledged his talent with a guitar and amp endorsement, making him only one of six on the continent to enjoy such a privilege.

It’s great that he’s one of the artists who will be jamming at this weekend’s edition of Park Acoustics. I recently had a chat to him about this and a few other things. This is what he had to say…

You released a new album (Perfection Kills) earlier in 2018. What makes this album different from your previous releases?

Well, it’s self produced for one. I think it’s a more raw representation of what I do, closer to our live performances. That was the idea. Songs were still a strong focus, just done in a more organic way.

You were one of the opening acts for Incubus in February this year in Pretoria. Tell us about your experience

It was a great honor to be one of the supporting acts. I unfortunately had to leave straight after my set to go play another show in JHB, so I missed Incubus. But great fun indeed.

What is the funniest thing that’s ever happened to Dan Patlansky during one of his live sets?

Our bass player soiled his pants.

When you think of Park Acoustics, what comes to mind?

A show where you can let your hair down and have a great time. Always a super cool crowd to play for.

Who would in a celebrity death match between Kanye West and Bruno Mars win and why?

Kanye West, never heard of her? So probably Bruno.

What can we expect from your set at Park Acoustics on the 6th of May?

A lot of stuff of the new album plus older stuff as well. We will, as always, be giving everything we have and leave nothing behind.

I’d like to thank Dan Patlansky for this interview and I wish him all of the best with his set at Park Acoustics on Sunday and his future musical endeavors. Things can only get better moving forward if you ask me.
