There’s no doubt in my mind that Francois van Coke is one the most renowned and iconic frontmen in South Africa and if you’ve ever watched Fokofpolisiekar or Van Coke Kartel perform, I think you’ll agree with me. (If not, you should make a plan to check out BOTH of these rock bands, because you’re missing out)
As the legendary lead singer of Fokofpolisiekar and Van Coke Kartel, Francois has in over a decade delivered thousands of epic performances across South Africa, Europe and in the East on large and small stages alike.
As a member of this country’s two most influential Afrikaans rock bands and as a solo artist, Francois van Coke has shared the stage with 30 Seconds to Mars, Metallica, Die Antwoord, Seether, Billy Talent, Jack Parow, Arno Carstens and Die Heuwels Fantasties, amongst others.
Now, Francois will have the opportunity to cross the Foo Fighters off his bucket list as well. He will be performing one song, “Lakeside”, with BLK JKS at Cape Town Stadium on the 10th of December. “I am a huge Foo Fighters fan. I saw them live in 2012 at Reading Fesival in England. It was one of the best shows I’ve seen in my entire life. I can’t wait to see them again in Cape Town,” says Francois. Shortly after this show, Francois and his guitarist, Jedd Kossew, will hit the road to go on their fourth solo tour this year.
Francois van Coke will be launching his much-anticipated debut solo album at next year’s KKNK in Oudtshoorn; followed by a national tour. The album’s title will be announced early next year. Supra Familias, owned by Pierre Greeff and Hunter Kennedy from Die Heuwels Fantasties, will be releasing the album.
“The album has been written and some songs have already been recorded. I think it’s definitely different from Van Coke Kartel and Fokofpolisiekar. I wanted to do something that is true to myself and I wanted to explore some of the many styles within the rock music genre. It was a little taxing to work without a full-time band, but it also gave me a wonderful opportunity to work with other brilliant musicians. It was fantastic to have the chance to work with both old and new friends on many of the songs. Jedd Kossew, Karen Zoid, Laudo Liebenberg, Hunter Kennedy and Arno Carstens will feature on the new album.” says Francois.
In the run-up to his solo album’s debut, Francois will also be releasing a limited edition 7” vinyl with Permanent Record in February 2015. The vinyl will feature his very first solo single, “Moontlik Nooit” (Maybe Never) as well as an exclusive acoustic version of “Skree” (Scream) on the vinyl’s B-side.
Moontlik Nooit will also be available from his website as a free download in February, however “Skree” will remain a vinyl exclusive. The vinyl will be made available for sale online via the Permanent Record website and during his tour in February next year.
This is pretty damn exciting news if you ask me. Having heard one track off his solo album at Atterbury Theatre in Pretoria the other night (which completely blew me away) I’m really curious to hear what the rest of the album sounds like.
Francois and Jedd will be playing shows at a few venues in the Western Cape and Eastern Cape throughout December, so make sure that you check one of these out while you’re on holiday:
- 12 December 2014: Cafe Roux, Noordhoek, Cape Town.
- 19 December 2014: Sandstone Cafe, Saldanha.
- 20 December 2014: Buckley’s Bellville.
- 30 December 2014: The Music Kitchen, Port Elizabeth.
