On the 11th of February I made my way to Hatfield Carnival in Pretoria. For the second year in a row Hatfield Carnival was the Pretoria leg of the Campus Invasion Tour. It was an awesome affair, featuring bands like the KONGOS (from the USA), Bittereinder, Die Heuwels Fantasties, Van Coke Kartel, The Newspapers, Frankie Fire, Yesterday’s Pupil and AKA.
I arrived at the venue a bit late (sadly missing Frankie Fire, Yesterday’s Pupil and The Newspapers) but still in time for the KONGOS, Bittereinder, Die Heuwels Fantasties and Van Coke Kartel. The vibe was electric in Hatfield. An estimated 30,000 people made their way into the area on the day. To my knowledge KONGOS played their last gig of their two month tour of South Africa in front of their largest crowd for any gig they’ve played. There must have been at least 5,000 people in front of the stage (if you ask me). Almost 11,000 people were in Hatfield Square which forced the SAPS to close off entry to the square while Die Heuwels Fantasties were playing their set on the street stage. It was crazy. All the bands I saw performed excellently. I want to congratulate all the organizers involved in the event on a job well done.
