The character is named after a computer programmer known by the show’s co-creator Bill Prady. Like his friends, Wolowitz is a big fan of comic books and superheroes. It is also quite clear that his current and preferred personal transportation is via his Vespa motor scooter.

He’s moved up in life since the first season though, he’s engaged to be married to Bernadette (who is a Micro-Biologist). Wolowitz is my 2nd favorite character on The Big Bang Theory (after Doctor Sheldon Cooper).
