Today I’m featuring another person in the Interesting Tweople category on Running Wolf’s Rant. Shelley Pembroke (@ShellsPembroke) hails from Johannesburg, Gauteng, South Africa. Her tweets caught my eye a few months ago, and has had me in stitches frequently. She really knows how to say things, if you ask me.
More info about Shelley Pembroke
As a young, mostly self-conscious lass, Shelley Pembroke spent a lot of her time wondering why she wasn’t as pretty or skinny as other girls. And the more she questioned these things, the more she realised that she actually quite liked the voice that she was questioning.
They became friends and she started to accept that the girl in her head was actually quite charming and witty. @ShellsPembroke made up awful words and said dirty things. This was to be her path: shit-talking.
After a few attempts at mastering other arts, including music and a degree in multimedia design, she found herself back at the mercy of the English language. Copywriting was never a choice she made, but rather one that was thrust upon her like an unwanted Christmas sweater. In the end, it seemed that she would never escape words and she settled into her job providing words where others could not. Then a chance meeting saw her getting acquainted with Twitter.
A client (God bless them) thought it would be a great idea to let her manage their social media accounts and in order to prepare for this responsibility, she decided to create her own Twitter profile – thus began her proverbial online word vomiting (something that I must say she does in style).
After about a year on Twitter she decided to start writing even more and not only started doing some blogging for Getaway Magazine, but also introduced her own blog (www.abrokenpen.co.za), where she shared her deep, profound thoughts on things that really matter, like Twilight.
Some steady interest from the public resulted in the decision to take her shit-talking to the next level and host a radio show on Euro Trash Radio, where she’s currently exploring more ways to say the word ‘scrotum’ in a tasteful way. Heck, she even got the nod as one of Cosmopolitan’s Twitter Queens of 2012 (which she think has to do with all the sexual favours she handed out).
She is currently still working as a copywriter, blogger and radio DJ, living in sin with the most unique human being in the world and planning more ways to give everyone a chance to meet the girl she started speaking to all those years ago. If all this doesn’t have you convinced, she’s an alcoholic and she has great boobs.
I recently had the opportunity to catch up with @ShellsPembroke and did an interview with her, this is what she had to say:
What is Shelley Pembroke currently working on?
I am presently exploring the world of radio on Euro Trash Music, copywriting like a champ and looking for new challenges, which may or may not include a romantic novel about a vampire and a girl with the acting ability of a potato.
What is the funniest thing that you’ve ever seen on Twitter?
There have been some genuinely funny tweets doing the rounds, but I find myself laughing more when people who should know better say stupid shit. Then I make some popcorn and follow the backlash with the enthusiasm of a child at Disneyland.
Would you say that Social Media has changed your life and how?
The answer is a resounding ‘fuck yes’. It’s given me some incredible opportunities, just for being me. Before the rise of social media, I would’ve needed at least a sex tape to get noticed. In an incredibly superficial world, Twitter has given people the chance to be acknowledged for more than their bra size. Booya.
If you could recommend 5 accounts to follow on Twitter, which ones would they be?
1. @Good_Moaning_ – if you love the English language as much as I do, you’ll appreciate the class it takes to fuck it up in such a fantastic way.
2. @sickipedia – if you have a strong stomach and you like writing inspiration.
3. @dorothyblack – it’s sex people, seriously! She’s basically the most honest person on twitter.
4. @ArsenalGent – I love Arsenal and ye olde English – this is basically all I want from life.
5. @tykeogh – Yes, he’s hot. But he’s actually incredibly intelligent and funny dude. Severely underrated.
What would you say makes an interesting Twitter account?
Alcohol and boobs. If that fails, just have good content. A lot of people get thrown in the fire for posting mundane content.
Believe it or not, most people eat lunch, so the fact that you’re doing it too is not exactly inspiring. If, however, you tell me you’re having lunch in an incredibly unique and unexpected way, then I’ll probably be in lesbians with you. You don’t need to be a celebrity / politician / world-traveller /dinosaur to be interesting.
I would like to thank Shelley Pembroke for taking this time to do an interview with me. It’s a huge pleasure to feature such a damn interesting individual on Running Wolf’s Rant. If you are not following on Twitter yet, do yourself a favour and do it, she definitely lights up your timeline constantly.
