Vicky Jankiewicz: An Interview with an Interesting Tweep

Today I’m featuring another interesting Twitter user. Today’s featured Twitter user and new member of Interesting Tweople on Running Wolf’s Rant is Vicky Jankiewicz (@Vicky_JKWICZ on Twitter).

For those of you might be wondering, yes, her surname is Polish and it’s also her first language. Vicky Jankiewicz studied in Stellenbosch for 5 years (one of which was a ‘party year’ after a bad break-up), but she managed to complete her Honours in History in 2011.

During the 5 years she was a waitress / bartender at  about every place in Stellies (be it Aandklas, Java, The Trumpet Tree or Klein Libertas and even RAMfest 5).

    Vicky Jankiewicz

She also worked as a full-time presenter at MFM 92.6 for a full 5 years, being part of the Marketing Team and the Website Team, doing community work (while mostly hungover) and she was also the Campus Manager at Stellenbosch Student Village. She also started writing for the Cape Town Music Scene blog.

After Vicky Jankiewicz completed her studies she decided it was time to do what she wanted to do for the past 2 years – go to South Korea and teach English. She applied for a few jobs locally because her dad said so and one was for an internship at Jacaranda FM and VOW FM in Johannesburg. Her friends were shocked when she announced that she’s moving to Johannesburg when she got the job offer – she was always the first to say that Cape Town is where her heart is, and that there is no way that she’ll ever move back to the North.

During the 5 days that she had to pack up and move, Jaco Brill (the founder of Cape Town Music Scene) contacted her and asked if she was willing to ‘run’ Johannesburg and Pretoria Music Scene. Jaco Brill (@JacoBrill on Twitter) and Ashley Brown (@charliebrownSA on Twitter) wanted to evolve from a blog to a website that expands beyond Cape Town into South Africa.

To Vicky this was like a mini dream come true as she absolutely LOVES our local music scene. She also loves to promote it  any way she can. A few months down the line she’s happy that she didn’t end up in Korea. She loves Johannesburg, the people that she’s met and the energy of the city. She actually loves it so much, she recently go the Jozi skyline tattooed on the back of her neck.

I recently had the privilege to do an interview with @Vicky_JKWICZ (Vicky Jankiewicz), this is what she had to say:

You are quite an active Twitter user, would you say that you tweeting too much is a good thing or a bad thing, and why?

I basically live on Twitter. If something happens to me, I tweet it. Luckily I don’t have a ‘boring’ life, random things keep on happening to me and I attend a LOT of live gigs and festivals (my poor liver…). These days I do think twice before I tweet, which is new to me. But I am totally addicted in sharing stories, and getting to know people I previously would not be lucky enough to meet if it wasn’t for Social Media!

Would you say that Social Media has made a small impact / huge impact on your life and why?

Social Media has made a MASSIVE impact in my life. I’m always connected, always aware of everything that goes on, and I have met amazing people through Twitter that I can now call my ‘friends’, which is pretty rad. Also, it’s got me so amped that one day, in the near future hopefully, I wouldn’t mind to find myself in a day job being a Digital Media Manager, or a Social Media Content and Community Manager…let’s just say it has created a lot more opportunities.

    Vicky Jankiewicz

My internship at Jacaranda and VOW also means I have to finish a Radio Studies Diploma at Wits University. So every now and then I attend class for two weeks from 9-5 and at the moment we are doing a course called “Radio Goes Online”.

My homework entails blogging, which is rad! My wonderful SAMS family (Ashley and Ezelle aka @LupaPhotography in Cape Town) and I are also busy working on a brand spanking new website to jazz up the look and feel! This is making me really excited, especially when we’re thinking about Launch Parties…;)

What is the funniest thing that’s ever happened to Vicky Jankiewicz on Twitter?

If ‘funny’ means embarrassing, then there’s too much to mention. A month or two ago, I went to the old Arcade Empire, right before they moved to their new location, and my friend and I ended up drinking a bit too much.

The band on stage (which will not be mentioned) was…making a noise (according to me), so I shouted (I cannot recall this at all, just to you know), that they must get off stage.

The next day someone told me about this incident, and the funniest thing was that one of the band members chatted to me on Twitter about the gig and asked if I enjoyed it…um…OOPS!

If you could recommend a fairly unknown local and a fairly unknown international band, which bands would Vicky Jankiewicz recommend and why?

This is a TOUGH question. ‘Unknown’ local band goes to Woodstock Mafia (@woodstock_mafia on Twitter). I absolutely love these guys, and recently they were featured on Studio 1 on MK Ruk Die Kaap.

As for an International band – I would have to say…alt-J (∆). They are a British Alternative Indie Pop Quartet, and they have been around since 2008. Go check out their single ‘Breezeblocks’ on YouTube, and tell me you do not love them.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank @Vicky_JKWICZ (Vicky Jankiewicz) for taking her time to answer all these questions. If you’re not following her on Twitter yet, do it now!

If you were wondering, you can follow Pretoria Music Scene via @Ptamusicsc, Johannesburg Music Scene via @Jhbmusicsc or Cape Town Music Scene via @Capetownmusicsc on Twitter. And of course, take a minute or 30 and check out the SA Music Scene website (at http://samusicscene.co.za) as well.
