I’ve always been a fan of stand up comedy, and if you’re one as well, I have some great news for you. Most competitions require begging your friends for votes, but M-Net Movies Comedy channel has taken a unique approach whilst showcasing its stand-up comedy festival in September 2014.
M-Net Movies Comedy is giving South African comedians a chance to win. Four up-and-coming comedians created individual pre-rolls for YouTube, promoting the stand-up comedy festival on channel 104. The one with the longest view time will win R10,000 in cash. Using YouTube analytics to determine who is the funniest based on time, means the playing field is fair, as multiple views from the same device won’t count. This is a first for brands using online advertising and is a great sign of brands adapting content to the particular platform. Check out the videos below to determine your favorite:
Mojak Lehoko – This Jozi native’s comedy could be regarded as observational and spontaneous, with a knack for identifying the humour in even the most “dire” of circumstances.
Lazola Gola – This Cape Town native’s act has matured into well rounded stage persona, dancing between unusual and quirky.
Glen Biderman-Pam – This Capetownian “hipster” (according to his Twitter profile) made his debut in 2011 and since then he has been making folks laugh at comedy clubs in Gauteng and the Western Cape.
Zakkiya Khan – This Pretoria native secured a finalist spot in Comedy Central’s amateur search last year. She is definitely one of the funniest female comedians in the country, in my opinion.
So which one of these comedians are your favorite? Leave a comment and let me know. Feedback is appreciated and welcome here.
If you’re a fan of stand up comedy your in for a treat in September. Comedy sets by Lewis Black, Robin Williams, George Carlin, Chris Rock and tons of other hilarious comedians will air on the channel on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights after 9 PM. For more information, check out M-Net Movies on Facebook or Twitter.
So, if you’ve had a long year so far and need something to cheer you up, remember to tune into M-Net Movies Comedy on channel 104 for plenty of stand-up.
