On Sunday I made my way to Park Acoustics at the Voortrekker Monument. It was an awesome way to celebrate my 36th birthday and it was jam packed with awesome tunes from the likes of Lise Chris, the Catlike Thieves, Matthew Mole, Wrestlerish and Yoav. Besides this it was also awesome checking out some of South Africa‘s top Afrikaans comedians.
The Sunset Comedy Stage at Park Acoustics featured appearance by MC Hannes Brummer, Francois van As, Werner Cloete, Monique Nortje and Melt Sieberhagen. It was an awesome way to pass the time before having the opportunity to view an awesome Pretoria sunset and a massive reminder not to take life to seriously.
I recorded some comedy bits on my Samsung Galaxy S3 at Sunset Comedy Stage from the Monique Nortje and Melt Sieberhagen sets. I trust that these will make you laugh out loud. Just a warning that these comedians don’t mind swearing and they’re doing their sets in Afrikaans.
Monique Nortjie originally hails from Brakpan on the East Rand and studied drama at the University of Pretoria. Nowadays she’s an accomplished improvised comedy actress, stand up comedian, voice over artist and has also been on writing teams for and performed in comedy television shows. She’s definitely one of the funniest Afrikaans comedians I’ve heard on comedy stage. Check out this three minute clip from her show at Park Acoustics on Sunday below.
Melt Sieberhagen is a South African actor and comic and was born on Ventersdorp in the North West Province of South Africa. Like Nortje, he also studied Drama at the University of Pretoria. Since then he’s appeared in SA television shows and movies (like District 9) and has also appeared in TV adverts for Cell C, Tops @ Spar, Bioplus, McCarthy Call-a-car and Wimpy. He’s also a voice over artist and has contributed to various television programs, commercials and a host of regular radio advertisements. Check out this 5 minute clip from his set at Park Acoustics below.
