Monday Classic: Pearl Jam – Corduroy

It’s time to kick-start your week with another Monday Classic, the first one for 2014. Today’s tune is “Corduroy” by Pearl Jam. The song was released on their 1994 album, Vitalogy.  The song was written by Eddie Vedder, but is credited to the band on the album.

Wikipedia describes “Corduroy” as follows: “It begins with an eerie guitar riff played as an arpeggio of the first two notes of a power chord. Then the song lifts off, proceeding with a structure of verse-chorus-verse-chorus-bridge-chorus-verse.

Although not revolutionary, the song structure is not completely normal, as almost no lyrics are repeated (including choruses) and the fade-out of the song begins after a verse rather than the traditional ending of a song after the third chorus. ” That’s pretty damn accurate if you ask me.

The song was never released as a single, but manage to reach the number 13 spot on the Billboard Modern Rock chart. It’s definitely one of my favorite Pearl Jam songs of all time and I will not mind hearing it if the band finally decides to embark on a tour to South Africa.

I still remember cranking this song up in my room when I was in high school, I played that Vitalogy tape so much it started to stretch. I’m pretty sure that you’ll enjoy “Corduroy” as much as I do, just watch the video of the band performing it in 2000 below.
