For those of you who did not know, Poison City Brewing represents the cultural aspects of Durban that its founders Andre Schubert and Graeme Bird have lived, surfed and dreamed. As proud, committed “Durbanites” they aim to showcase elements of the city through their exceptionally well-crafted beer and to position Poison City Brewing as the craft beer brand synonymous with the city that was recently proclaimed as the 7th best city to visit in the world by the New York Times.
Poison City Brewing is one of the more than 35 breweries who will be selling their brews at this year’s edition of the Capital Craft Beer Festival (which is happening on the 10th of June at the National Botanical Gardens in Pretoria). I recently chatted to Graeme from Poison City Brewing, this is what he had to say:
Where does the name “Poison City” come from?
Poison City is another name for Durban. Its called that because of Durban Poison, the most famous weed (cannabis) in the world. It put Durban on the map globally and we think that’s pretty cool because we love Durban too and we want our craft beer to make Durban famous.
What is your favourite quote about beer and why?
Hunter S Thompson said “There is an ancient Celtic axiom that says ‘Good people drink good beer.’ Which is true, then as now. Just look around you in any public bar room and you will quickly see: Bad people drink bad beer. Think about it.” That’s pretty self explanatory I guess 😉
What is your favourite drinking song and why?
I don’t know any drinking songs but I do love listening to great music while I’m drinking beer. My favourite song is probably “Where is my mind” by the Pixies. The song is about the ocean and that’s the place I like best.
Why should punters sample your brews at Capital Craft?
We’re about edge meets class. Isn’t that where everyone would truly like be?
I’d like to thank Graeme and Poison City Brewing for this interview. I will definitely be sampling their brews at Capital Craft 2017 on the 10th of June, will you? If you don’t have tickets yet, buy yours on their website or enter our competition NOW!
