Great news! Seth MacFarlane is releasing another TV series, The Orville later this year! For those of you who did not know, MacFarlane is the creator of TV’s Family Guy and the co-creator of TV’s American Dad and The Cleveland Show. He has also written and directed both Ted movies and 2014’s A Million Ways To Die in The West.
MacFarlane’s new Science Fiction / Drama series will make its debut on Fox in the USA in September 2017. The show has been labelled by some as a Star Trek spoof and will follow the crew of the not-so-functional exploratory ship, The Orville in the Earth’s interstellar fleet, 300 years from now.
The Orville will feature performances by Seth MacFarlane, Adrianne Palicki (who you might remember from Friday Night Lights), Scott Grimes (who also appeared on ER), Peter Macon, J Lee, Halston Sage, Penny Johnson Jerald, Mark Jackson and Norm Macdonald (who needs no introduction if you’re a comedy fan). Great news is that similar to the original Star Wars trilogy, the series will rely on models for much of its spacecraft rather than CGI.
It’s well-known that Macfarlane is a huge Star Trek. He paid homage to the cast of Star Trek: The Next Generation on Family Guy and appeared in a few episodes of Star Trek: Enterprise in the early 2000’s. The Orville takes a stab at Star Trek but will most likely have its own storylines in its own universe of planets.
Yesterday Fox released a trailer for The Orville. Check it out below:
The Science Fiction fan inside me is really excited about this show. Let’s hope that this won’t flop. I doubt that it will though, Jon Favreau (who directed Elf, Iron Man, Iron Man 2, Cowboys & Aliens and The Jungle Book is directing the pilot and is also acting as an Executive Producer for the show.
