A quick but thorough interview with Warwick Rautenbach from Hellcats

In case you did not know, Warwick Rautenbach is the guitarist of Hellcats. This two piece garage rock act from Jozi is playing at Oppikoppi Nomakanjani this weekend and are also part of the line-up for Blood Brothers 2018 (which is happening in Cape Town and Centurion at the end of September).

I had a chat Warwick Rautenbach about these two must-attend events on the SA Live Music calendar. This is what he had to say:

What is the funniest thing that you’ve ever seen at Oppikoppi?

I had lost Alessandro(my singer) for a large portion of the night and had been looking for him and I arrived back at our tent to find him passed out with his hand on the lock of the tent. He had been trying to get into the tent and his body had just given up and decided to go into hibernation mode. I woke him up and without missing a beat, he stood up, dusted himself off and yelled “TEQUILAAAAAA” at the top of his lungs. What a fucking trooper!

You are playing at your third Oppikoppi this year, what can we expect from your set?

We had toyed with the idea of having a guest bassist join us again and had also discussed some on stage gimmicks. We chucked those ideas and eventually decided to concentrate on what we’re good at – being a stripped down, siff, loud, two piece rock n roll band – we’re paying homage to the Top Bar – no frills, just the two of us, making a fucking racket. We have a good mixture of old Hellcats tracks (two of which we played at our very 1st Hellcats gig) and some brand new songs which no one has ever heard. Its going to be hard and fast and we are gonna fuck shit up, good and proper, on that Top Bar stage.

How many kick-drums has Allesandro broken in his lifetime and what’s the story behind each one of them?

He saves breaking kick drums for Koppi, so last year was the first time. I remember the sound guy coming to us after the show saying that in his 13 years of doing his job, that was the 1st time he’d ever seen a motherfucker bliksem a kick drum so hard it broke.

Which acts are you looking forward to at Oppikoppi Nomakanjani?

Shit man – There are so many but I’d have to say I’m the most excited to see Fokof tear up James Phillips.

What is the ideal amount of tequila shots one should have daily at Oppikoppi and why?

Ten is my daily limit, but I usually exceed that number by at least 7 more. Sucker for punishment.

You are also playing at Blood Brothers 2018 in September, what can we expect from you at that gig?

Ja man, we are poes amped for Blood Brothers – we still cant believe we’re on that line-up. We’re opening the show with a filthy little Hellcats set and its gonna be a banger to kick things off. Then we get to play a couple songs with our rock n roll heroes for the remainder of the night – the guys have put together a KILLER set of songs for the shows, and without any bias, I think its gonna be the best one yet!

I’d like to thank Warwick Rautenbach for this interview and I wish both Hellcats good luck with their set at Oppikoppi this coming weekend and at Blood Brothers 2018 in September.
