Great news! Aussie rockers Wolfmother were confirmed for Oppikoppi Odyssey 2014 last week! This straight shooting modern rock ‘n roll act promises to blow everyone away at this year’s festival. Expect chaos and some epic rock ‘n roll riffs making sweet love to your eardrums in the African bushveld my friends. Mark my words: “Hier kom groot kak…”
Wolfmother recently released a brand new recording entitled “New Crown” and like all their previous albums, this recording features songs that will become rock ’n roll standards such as “She’s Got It”, “Tangerine Dream” and “I Don’t Know Why”. It’s one of my favorite albums of 2014 and I’m looking forward to hearing most of of the new songs live, but I’m also excited to rock the fuck out to classic Wolfmother tracks like “New Moon Rising”, “Joker and the Thief” and “Woman”.
It’s clear why Oppikoppi considers them as one of their favorite acts of the last decade and why they have been trying to get them to play in South Africa for the last 4-5 years. This definitely promises to be one of the highlights of the festival. Just look at Wolfmother performing “Joker and The Thief” live at Rock am Ring (in Germany).
Wolfmother isn’t the only the international act that was announced for this year’s edition of Oppikoppi. British alternative rock band, Editors will be there too. Having released two UK number one albums and two further top 10 UK studio albums, (including top 10 tracks in both the UK and South Africa), gained numerous awards, and headlined festivals across Europe, fans of the band can expect to hear the tracks “Smokers Outside the Hospital Doors”, “Munich”, “Papillon”, “Sugar” and more of the bands best from their 2013 album The Weight of Your Love. I’m not a huge fan, but they do look pretty impressive live, check out the video below recorded at Sziget festival if you don’t believe me.
Also joining the list of over 100 of the best South African and international artists and DJ’s, will be the “Wake Me Up” co-writer and singer, Aloe Blacc. Aloe Blacc is known for his hit singles “I Need a Dollar” which launched his career in early 2010. “The Man”, his first single off his new album Lift Your Spirit (available now) is a sweetly boastful single that gives a sly nod to Elton John’s “Your Song” and has already climbed to the top 10 on Billboard’s Digital Songs chart in early 2014. This talented singer/songwriter combines folk, soul and pop into irresistibly powerful tracks that capture the complexities of human emotion. Check out the music video for “I Need Dollar” below.
Just a reminder that besides these 3 International Acts, Rival Sons (USA), Willy Mason (USA), Cat Power (USA), The Inspector Cluzo (France), Sarah Blasko (Australia), The Last Supper (Canada), John Shearer (US), aKing, Van Coke Kartel, Newtown Knife Gang, Squeal, Schalk Joubert Band, Spoek Mathambo, Shortstraw, Springbok Nude Girls, Reason, Stoker, Michael Lowman, BCUC, Gangs of Ballet, Valiant Swart, Zebra & Giraffe, HHP, Albert Frost & Dan Patlansky, PHFat, Boargazm, Matthew Mole, Urban Creep, Hinds Brothers, Ard Matthews, The Muffinz, Champions of the Sonarverse, Nick Turner, Dead Lucky, Gert Vlok Nel, City of Heroes, The Drift, Grassy Spark, Diamond Thug, Albinobeach, Deity’s Muse, The Watermark High, Bittereinder, The Frown, The Kiffness, KilKil, Martin Brothers, Fridge Poetry, Bright Lights Big City, Some Grow Young, MaJozi, India, Holly & The Woods, The Olympic, Black Math , Wrestlerish, Christian Tiger School, Spoonerman, Dave Baudains, 3rd World Spectator, 4am, Apple SawC, B_Type, Casper Nyovest, Van T, Crazy White Boy, Soulo Star, Gevoel van Veiligheid, Yesterday’s Pupil, King B, DJ Doowap, Man as Machine, Shout Hey!, The Apollo, Freedom for Your Life, DJ Spoko, Fake Leather Blues Band, Satori, Original Swimming Party, Juggernaut, Women Who Kill, DJ Muzi, Hawkword, Kat le Kat, Miss CJ, Madala Kunene, Liela Groenewald, Runaway Train Cult, Kite Rider, Gangsterdam, Kyle Watson, State Society, Greg Georgiades, Sunday Punchers and Taxi Violence have also been announced for the festival so far.
Some folks reading this might be a little disappointed with the line-up so far, but I’m not. The local act line-up is insane, Wolfmother and The Inspector Cluzo are going to be there and I’m thinking that the organizers may have something up their sleeve that’s going to blow us away even more, so please stop whining.
