Wolfmother: 10 Interesting Facts You Might Not Know

It’s a well-known fact that Wolfmother is coming to South Africa in August 2014. They will be headlining Oppikoppi 2014 Odyssey and One Night in Cape Town.

It promises to be one of the musical highlights of the year. I was so excited when I heard that they were coming I almost jumped over the moon (but unfortunately the office’s roof stopped me from getting too excited at work).

    Wolfmother Band

Here are 10 Wolfmother Facts You Might Not Know

    1. Wolfmother was formed in 2000 in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia.

    2. Andrew Stockdale, Ian Peres and Vin Steele are the current members of the band.

    3. Former members of Wolfmother include Myles Heskett, Chris Ross, Dave Atkins, Aidan Nemeth, Will Rockwell-Scott, Elliott Hammond and Hamish Rosser.

    4. To date Wolfmother have released three studio albums: Wolfmother (in 2005), Cosmic Egg (in 2009) and New Crown (in 2014).

    5. Wolfmother‘s hit single, “Woman” is commonly mistaken for a Led Zeppelin song (thanks to Andrew Stockdale’s vocal style). Forced to address this issue in the press the band have claimed that they’re not trying to emulate the 1970’s classic rock icons at all. Stockdale sings about a very appealing woman who understands him.

    6. The band hit song, “Joker and the Thief” (which was inspired by Bob Dylan’s “All Along The Watchtower”) has been used in films like Jackass Number Two, Shrek The Third, The Hangover and Here Comes the Boom, featured in commercials for Peugeot and Mitsubishi and was also used in Need for Speed: Carbon. According to Stockdale, this was the result when he decided that he wanted to write a stadium rock song.

    7. The band got their name from a book called Skinny Legs and All (by Tom Robbins). They told the people who offered them a show they were Wolfmother and from there on everyone was like, “so have you heard of those Wolfmother guys?’, so the name stuck.

    8. To date the band has won 3 APRA Awards, 3 ARIA Awards, 1 Grammy Award, 1 J Award and 1 Jack Award. They’ve also been nominated for BRIT Awards and MTV Australia Awards.

    9. Music critics and fans have labeled Wolfmother‘s music as hard rock / stoner rock / heavy metal / neo-psychedelia.

    10. The album name “Cosmic Egg”‘ comes from a position in yoga best described by Andrew Stockdale as “like the fetal pose“.

Well, there you have it, I hope you find these facts interesting and are now feeling even more hyped up for Oppikoppi 2014 and One Night in Cape Town. If not, check out this live version of “Joker and the Thief” at Rock AM Ring 2011 in Germany below:
