Basson Laas’s latest release, ‘Worth Loving,’ marks a significant chapter in his musical journey. Known for his poignant storytelling and uplifting melodies, Basson has crafted a song that resonates deeply with themes of appreciation and emotional clarity.

In this interview, we delve into the creative process behind Basson Laas’ ‘Worth Loving,’ exploring its evolution, the inspiration driving its narrative, and the artistic decisions that shape both the song and its accompanying music video.

Basson Laas

Could you share with us the initial inspiration that led to the creation of ‘Worth Loving’ and how its themes reflect your personal journey as an artist?

“Absolutely. It was mid-2011 after coming back from a night out, a sudden hint of inspiration just came out of nowhere on the kitchen floor. At that time,  you could say that I’ve been having feelings of loneliness and a lack of love.”

“But it was just a feeling. I had the love of so many people around me in abundance, I had no reason to feel that way. Emotions don’t always need reasons to make you feel a certain way. But combining that idea with the knowledge of the truth I was able to come up with a cathartic song of love.”

The music video for ‘Worth Loving’ takes a unique narrative approach by showcasing the bond between a dog and its owner. What inspired this creative direction, and how does it complement the song’s message?

“We felt that showcasing a bond between a dog and its owner related a lot to the lyrics if you listen closely. It seemed more unique of an idea that telling a story of boy meets girl. Jannes de Villiers of Moving North Media came up with the idea and luckily also knew just the right combo living in Cape Town.”

“Any animal lover would be able to relate to the companionship and loyalty of dogs. They think of us as the ultimate thing worth loving. Sometimes I wonder if that and having treats is the only thing they do understand.”

‘Worth Loving’ has been described as having a positive, Disney-like vibe. How did Basson Laas and his team ensure this essence was captured during the recording process?

“Well, it was already just such a positive and upbeat song when I walked into the studio and I think the chorus maybe gives off a slight Disney feel, but it wasn’t intentional and it’s not like it’s an “I can show you the world” type of song from Aladdin.”

” Werner Kahts, the producer, and I just “chiselled” out what we felt in the moment and when he added the percussion elements (a brilliant drummer that he is) the song came alive! The piano and other elements followed.”

As an independent artist, what were some of the challenges you faced in bringing ‘Worth Loving’ to life, and how did you overcome them?

“You know, it can get quite expensive to fund such projects out of your pocket. There are so many expenses in trying to record and release a song in a proper manner as best as you can, without guarantees of its success.”

” It’s kind of a gamble. But I’ve been lucky that well-paying gigs have been coming my way more and more enabling me to save up for such endeavours. But it’s a slow process. Luckily, I have a fantastic ever-growing network of support of all kinds that make it much easier.”

How has Basson Laas’ musical style evolved since your debut EP, and in what ways does ‘Worth Loving’ represent a continuation or departure from your previous work?

“I am still finding my feet in creating the sound I like. But I’m confident that I’m on the right track. The change in musical style has not been deviating too much and I feel that working with the same producer (Werner Kahts from Good Morning Sweet Songbird) does have its merit in having a golden thread throughout all the songs we have been and will be working on together in the future.”

“But both of us are open to anything and enjoy to being bound by anything. There’s a lot of freedom in that.”

Looking beyond ‘Worth Loving,’ what themes or stories is Basson Laas eager to explore in his upcoming projects, and how does he envision his artistic trajectory unfolding in the future?

“That’s a tricky one. I’ve been asking myself the same thing. I don’t know, but I’m sure the next six to ten songs I’ve got lined up that are a work in progress will teach me a lot and help me explore new themes.”

“I would bet that my songs will always have a lesson or two and a form of catharsis if I can help it. I want to share positive themes and songs with people unless it feels necessary to do otherwise.”

Can you describe the collaborative process between you (Basson Laas) and producer Werner Kahts in shaping the sound and feel of ‘Worth Loving’? Were there any memorable moments or challenges along the way?

‘Mm, nothing noteworthy I’m afraid. Worth Loving has gone through so many changes over the years I got to know exactly what I’d like in the production or not.”

“When Werner Kahts and I sat in the studio, it came together very quickly. It was one of the easiest songs to record so far. Almost what seemed like a blink of an eye the process was over. Right then and there we eagerly started recording a second single. But more on that later this year.”

I would like to thank Basson Laas for this interview and I wish him all of the best with his future musical endeavors.
