Everyone loves an underdog story and when you throw in gaming, motorsport and buckets of adrenaline for good measure, you get Gran Turismo – one of the most inspiring sports movies of recent times.
Adapted from the popular PlayStation video game series, this biographical motor racing drama is coming to Apple TV from 20 October 2023 DStv Box Office from 27 October 2023, courtesy of Sony Pictures Entertainment. It is directed by none other than South Africa’s Neill Blomkamp of District 9 fame.
Gran Turismo is based on the unbelievable true story of a team of underdogs – a struggling working-class gamer (Archie Madekwe – Midsommar), a failed former racecar driver (David Harbour – Stranger Things) and an idealistic motorsport executive (Orlando Bloom – Lord of the Rings). Together, they risk it all to take on the most elite sport in the world.
The film is inspired by the real story of British teenager Jann Mardenborough, a Gran Turismo video gamer who became a professional racing car driver. Incredible though it may sound, this digital driver actually ended up making it in the real world – including racing at Le Mans.
Expect dazzling special effects, breathtaking action sequences and a story with true heart and grit in this gamer-turns-racer story, taking a lap of honour on DStv Box Office this October! Also starring Djimon Hounsou and former Spice Girl Geri Halliwell Horner.

The Equalizer 3 – also sometimes referred to as “The Threequalizer” – is directed by Antoine Fuqua, who also teamed up Washington for his Oscar-winning turn in Training Day. Washington returns as retired US Marine and intelligence agent Robert McCall to exact more nail-biting vigilante justice on the world’s bad guys.
Since giving up his life as a government assassin, McCall has struggled to come to terms with the horrific things he’s done in the past and finds solace in meeting out justice on behalf of the oppressed. Finding himself surprisingly at home in a small town in southern Italy, he discovers his new friends are under the control of local crime bosses. As events turn deadly, he is forced to become their protector by taking on the mafia.
Dakota Fanning, who co-starred with Washington in Man on Fire (2004), features as CIA officer Emma Collins.
Expect extreme action set against the backdrop of beautiful Italian locations, all wrapped up with Washington’s trademark charm and magnetism as he takes on Sicilian mobsters – a killer (literally) combination!
The Guardian says “The mafia are no match for a ruthlessly efficient Denzel Washington in the latest instalment of the visceral thriller.”
Both of these films are available to rent on DSTV Box Office. Gran Turismo is already available to buy and keep on Apple TV as well. The Equalizer 3 will be available to buy and keep on Apple TV from the 17th of November 2023.
