If you want to know how to obtain residence in Australia, I will tell you right away that it is not easy. It is not a process that lasts one day, nor one month, nor two, it is rather a long-distance race that can last for years.

For those who have achieved it, it has cost them time, money, many headaches and the occasional tear. However, the easiest thing is to study a course that allows you to obtain permanent residence in Australia.

Australia

But you have to be positive because, of course, it is not something impossible. Every year thousands of people who start studying in Australia get it and you can also be one of them.

If you are already clear that this is your goal, from here I recommend you focus on it like a beast and go for it. Who follows her gets her!

Now, there are several ways to obtain it. You can become an Australian partner and apply for residence in Australia that way.

Mind you, it’s not easy either! They will ask you to prove your relationship from time to time and you will have to go through several types of visas.

How to obtain permanent residence in Australia?

To apply for a residence permit in Australia there are several ways, but first I would like to remind you that I am not dedicated to managing this type of visa, so any questions you have regarding the skilled visa or the sponsor, from here I recommend that you consult a professional.

No one better than a registered agent or an immigration lawyer to help you with the process. I also advise you to consult the official Australian immigration website, where you can check if your professional career is on the list.

What I can help you with is guiding and advising you on which studies will give you points to apply for residency in Australia.

To get the famous Permanent Residence after a student visa, I would have 2 options: the first would be to get a sponsor from a company and the second, to enter the general skilled migration program.

Within these 2 options there are many types of visas.

Visas for Sponsor:

  • Employer Nomination Scheme (ENS)
  • Regional Sponsored Skilled Migration Scheme (RSMS)
  • Temporary Work (Short Stay Specialist) Subclass 400 visas
  • Temporary Activity Subclass 408 visas
  • Training Subclass 407 Visas

Visas for the Skilled Migration Program:

  • Skilled Independent Subclass 189
  • Skilled Nominated Subclass 190
  • Skilled Regional Provisional Subclass 489
  • Skilled Regional Subclass 887
  • Graduate Temporary Subclass 485
  • Recognized Graduate Subclass 476

And within each type, there are even more subtypes… to go crazy!

To apply for any of these visas, you must meet certain criteria. The main thing is that your studies and your profession coincide and that said profession appears on: the Medium and Long-term Strategic Skills List (MLTSSL) or the Short-term Skilled Occupation List (STSOL).

IMPORTANT: Keep in mind that these lists may vary each year depending on the needs of the country.

What should you study to obtain permanent residence in Australia?

Below, I present the professions that year after year occupy the “top positions” of the lists and some examples of courses that you can study to shoot like a rocket towards obtaining permanent residence in Australia.

Remember that the key to achieving this goal is to be well organized from the beginning and choose the right course.

The professions most in demand and, therefore, the ones with the greatest probability of reaching the sponsor or requesting the skilled visa are the following:

Engineers and architects

Engineers usually have an easier time getting permanent residency in Australia.

Almost all specializations are on the list of most in-demand occupations and professions in Australia. If you have experience in the sector, the chances of getting a sponsor or applying for the skilled visa will be greater.

On the other hand, if you have studied engineering in your country, but do not have experience, the easiest way is to take a master’s degree. Almost all Australian universities have a great offer. The investment of money is high, but if it is really what you like, it is a safe path.

The same is true of a career in architecture, which is also on the list of most in-demand professions in Australia and it is usually relatively easy to find a sponsor.

You can also study an engineering or architecture course that allows you to earn points towards permanent residence in Australia.

Some examples of courses:

  • Diploma of Engineering – Technical + Diploma of Civil Construction Design
  • Advanced Diploma of Electronics and Communications Engineering
  • Diploma of Engineering-Technical
  • Advanced Diploma of Engineering Technology- Electrical
  • Certificate IV in Engineering Certificate III in Engineering Fabrication Trade
  • Certificate III in Engineering Mechanical Trade (Fitting and Turning)

Sanitary branch

Both medicine, nursing, psychology, nutrition, physiotherapy, occupational therapy and veterinary medicine are a safe bet to apply for PR.

The Australian health system always needs professionals in this field, but to validate your degree you must be patient and take the occasional course that the Australian government requires. The good news is that once you get into the Australian healthcare system, you won’t be short of work, and it pays very well.

If you do not have experience you can choose to do a master’s degree or a TAFE. Studying a nursing course will easily lead you to get points for residency in Australia.

Some examples of courses:

  • Diploma of Anaesthetic Technology
  • Diploma of Laboratory Technology
  • Diploma of Dental Technology
  • Certificate III in Dental Assisting
  • Diploma of Nursing
  • Certificate III in Individual Support
  • Diploma of Community Services
  • Diploma of Mental Health

Trade careers

Attention, because trades such as electrician, carpentry, plumbing, mechanics, air conditioning installation and repair, wall painting, construction, elevator mechanics, etc., are professions that are also on the list. In Australia there are many VET and TAFE courses with which to train and easily access the job market.

Some examples of courses:

  • Certificate IV in Automotive Mechanical Overhauling
  • Certificate IV in Automotive Performance Enhancement
  • Certificate III in Light Vehicle Mechanical Technology
  • Certificate III in Automotive Electrical Technology
  • Certificate III in Painting and Decorating
  • Certificate III in Carpentry

Hospitality and restaurants

Australia is a country that, thanks to the Asian influence and other cultures such as Europe, has always been, gastronomically speaking, at the forefront.

The restaurants here do not stop, there is no need to wait for the weekend for them to fill up and the competition between them is very high, so they are always looking for new chefs capable of contributing new ideas and improving the menus. The cooking and pastry professions are currently in high demand.

Finding a job in this field is relatively easy, which is why studying cooking is a very popular option among international students. A course of more than 92 weeks in Hospitality and Commercial Cookery can give you access to Graduate Temporary Subclass 485.

Some examples of courses:

  • Certificate IV in Commercial Cookery
  • Certificate III in Commercial Cookery
  • Diploma in Hospitality Manager

Information and Communication Technologies (ICT)

And, of course, I can’t forget about technology-related jobs. This type of work is in great demand in Australia and is an interesting option to obtain permanent residence.

If you check the job search engines, you will see that there is always an abundance of offers for computer scientists, web programmers, software engineers, system analysts, programmers, application designers, graphic designers and web page designers.

Some examples of courses:

  • Diploma of Information Technology Networking
  • Certificate III in Information, Digital Media and Technology
  • Diploma of Information Technology Networking
  • Certificate IV in Digital Media and Interactive Games
  • Certificate IV Information Technology Support
  • Certificate IV Web Based Technologies

Accounting

Accountants also have a place in the list of professions in demand. Job offers abound and you can easily become certified by studying a two-year VET course. However, this profession often goes in and out of the list. He is currently in it, so if you like this branch, take advantage and study an accounting course that allows you to obtain residence in Australia.

Some examples of courses:

  • Accounting Diploma
  • Certificate IV in Accounting
  • Certificate IV in Bookkeeping
  • Certificate III in Accounts Administration

Graphic and audiovisual arts

This is one of the branches that has recently been added to the list to obtain the skill visa in Australia. As a result of the audiovisual revolution, it is one of the most demanded careers currently in the antipodes. If you have studied audiovisual communication or graphic design, you can get points to qualify for permanent residence. However, if you want to specialize in a specific area or start your career from scratch, there are many film and communication schools that will allow you to fulfill your dream.

Some examples of courses:

  • Certificate IV in Graphic Design
  • Diploma in Graphic Design
  • Film Diploma
  • Diploma of Communication and Creative Industries
  • Diploma of Visual Arts
  • Diploma of 3D Animation

Education

The Australian education system enjoys great prestige and recognition worldwide.

In the list of the professions most in demand each year are teachers of early childhood education, primary, secondary, special education and sign language.

If you are already a teacher, you can study a VET course at Childcare Education and start working as an assistant in a nursery. In the regional areas there is always a great demand and it is a quite usual way to get residency. However, this option is not permanent on the list, it can change, so we recommend that you inform yourself well before starting to study.

You can also choose to study a 2-year master’s degree to be a secondary school teacher.

Some examples of courses:

  • Diploma of Early Childhood Education and Care
  • Certificate III in Early Childhood Education and Care
  • Certificate III in Education Support
  • Certificate IV in Education Support

Marketing

Although it is not in the MLTSSL, you can find it in the Short-term Skilled Occupation List (STSOL), the list of professions with which you can be sponsored.

Marketing is a profession that is in high demand in Australia. Without going any further, all schools for international students that offer VET and General English courses have a Marketing department.

If you don’t want to invest so much money in doing a master’s degree, you can take a VET marketing course that will surely open doors for you when it comes to getting a job.

Some examples of courses:

  • Diploma of Marketing and Communication
  • Certificate IV in Marketing and Communication
  • Diploma of Social Media Marketing

How to obtain residency in Australia: Minimum course requirements

Finally, it is important that you know that, although these courses can help you obtain a residence permit in Australia, there are other factors that you must take into account:

  • The course you choose must be approved by CRICOS;
  • Its duration must be at least two years full-time;
  • Apply for residency no later than 6 months after finishing your studies;
  • Comply with all the requirements requested by the government, such as qualifications, validation, level of English, assessments…
