BYD is making it clear: they aren’t just participating in the South African market – they’re aiming to lead it with the Atto 8.
The world’s top manufacturer of new energy vehicles has officially pulled the curtain back on this massive seven-seater plug-in hybrid (PHEV) designed to bridge the gap between luxury, space, and eco-conscious engineering.

Whether you’re tackling the school run or heading out on a cross-country road trip, the Atto 8 is built to handle the unique demands of the South African lifestyle.
Power Meets Versatility: Two Ways to Play
The Atto 8 isn’t a one-size-fits-all SUV. It launches with two distinct personalities, allowing drivers to choose the balance of “oomph” and efficiency that fits their driveway:
- The Premium (DM-i): Focused on efficiency, this edition offers a massive combined range of up to 728km, making range anxiety a thing of the past.
- The Performance (DM-p): For those who want a bit more bite, this variant pumps out 359kW and features advanced body control for a more spirited, responsive drive.
Engineering That Defies Expectations
At the core of the Atto 8 is BYD’s fifth-generation DM Super Hybrid Technology. This isn’t just a backup engine; it’s a seamless marriage of electric grit and fuel reliability.
For the speed-seekers, the DM-p configuration pairs a 1.5L turbo engine with dual motors to hit 0–100 km/h in just 4.3 seconds. If you go full electric (BEV), that time drops to a staggering 3.9 seconds thanks to a dual-motor system pushing up to 810kW.
The “Super E” Advantage: Built on a 1,000-volt platform, the BEV version can add 400km of range in just five minutes. That’s barely enough time to grab a coffee.
A Mobile Living Space
Measuring over five metres long with a 2,950mm wheelbase, the Atto 8 is essentially a luxury lounge on wheels.
BYD has moved away from the “car” feel, opting for a “mobile living space” aesthetic.
- Tech-Forward: A massive 15.6-inch infotainment screen and a 21-speaker hi-fi system.
- Safety First: Level 2+ DiPilot 300 driver assistance using laser-based sensing.
- Premium Finishes: Think leather upholstery, bamboo-wood trim, and 21-inch wheels.
Steve Chang, Managing Director of BYD Auto South Africa, notes that the Atto 8 is designed to feel “both premium and accessible,” whether you’re navigating tight city streets or cruising the open highway with the whole family.
