Playtopia Festival is happening again in December 2026 at the Homecoming Centre in Cape Town. Gamers, developers, and digital art enthusiasts are invited to the African continent’s most unique video game adventure.
As a singular event that bridges the gap between global legends and local newbies, the festival remains a vital hub for exhibiting games, attending industry talks, and celebrating the ever-expanding art form of indie gaming.

Hanna Fogelberg of Landfall Games notes that the festival’s unique mix of games, art, and people creates a radiating space of creativity. This atmosphere inspires a cross-pollination of ideas, encouraging game developers to explore installation art and artists to delve into game design, sharing passion across diverse cultures.
Inside Arcadia: A Retro Fantasy Showcase
The heart of Playtopia is undoubtedly Arcadia, the festival’s main arcade. Featuring over 150 games, the space is built inside a custom-designed set reminiscent of an 80s retro fantasy movie.
Created by the Paisley Royal team – known for their work on Africa Burn and Bazique – the showcase is funded by indie studios and publishing houses from around the world to highlight Cape Town as a premier gaming destination.
This remarkable environment serves as the backdrop for showcasing upcoming titles from the local community, such as “Relooted” by Nyamakop and “Shroom and Gloom” by Team Lazerbeam, alongside international hits like “Cult of the Lamb” by Massive Monster and “Skate Story” by Sam Eng.
Calls for Participation: Developers, Speakers, and Volunteers
Playtopia Festival has opened its calls for participation, seeking the next wave of talent to shape the 2026 experience.
Developers are invited to apply to show their games in the arcade for free, offering a rare chance to get their titles in front of an enthusiastic audience before their official release dates.
Following the massive success of the 2025 Summit, which hosted speakers like Abubakar Salim and Chipzel, the festival is also looking for new voices to lead its 2026 talks.
For the first time, previous talks have been recorded and are being uploaded to the Playtopia YouTube channel, allowing the global community to access the wealth of knowledge shared at the event.

Volunteers get a front-row seat to the bleeding edge of the scene, gaining invaluable experience and networking opportunities within the industry.
Whether you are looking to exhibit a breakthrough title, share your expertise on stage, or simply immerse yourself in the world of indie gaming, Playtopia Festival 2026 promises to be an unforgettable chapter in South Africa’s digital cultural history.
