For over two decades, Danny Painter has been a beloved fixture in South African entertainment, transitioning effortlessly from children’s television to radio, television, podcasting, and live events.
Today, audiences know her as the vibrant voice on Jacaranda FM, hosting Love Songs With Danny Painter every Monday to Thursday evening, as well as the Top 40 With Danny Painter Powered By Pick N Pay on Saturdays.

However, behind her recognizable voice, colorful tattoos, and larger-than-life personality is a woman whose resilience has been forged by profound experiences largely unseen by the public.
Growing Up in the Spotlight
Danny Painter’s career kicked off at just three years old in children’s theater, eventually leading to her breakout television role as a teenager on SABC 2’s popular show World Of Winners. For children of the 1990s and early 2000s, she was a daily afternoon companion.
Despite the glamour often associated with television, the reality of childhood fame was overwhelming. She recounts being thrust into a massive audience, resulting in surreal moments like needing security escorts at the zoo and seeing her face plastered across airport pillars.
The industry also placed immense pressure on young talent to maintain a specific image. She recalls strict weekly weigh-ins and an environment where simple mistakes or changes in appearance – like dyeing her hair or gaining a few kilograms – could cost a presenter their job.
Navigating Heartbreak and Grief
In 2023, Danny Painter faced unimaginable tragedy when her husband of 17 years, Phil, passed away suddenly from a heart attack. The shock was immediate and devastating. A year later, she confronted another profound loss when her father died by suicide.
Facing this compounding grief fundamentally shifted her perspective on loss and the daunting process of moving forward. She believes that while everyone will eventually face the pain of losing loved ones, the key is simply getting up each day and trying to do your best to navigate it.
Finding Love and Healing
Opening up to love again after losing a spouse brings a complex mix of emotions. For the past year, Danny Painter has been dating Nick Storm, a relationship that has provided her with the safe space to experience happiness without pretending her grief has vanished. She credits him for his calm demeanor and for allowing her the room to openly grieve and talk about her late husband.
While she admits that finding joy can sometimes trigger feelings of guilt, she acknowledges that doing the necessary emotional work has led to an incredibly healthy and fulfilling relationship.
Danny Painter is Rebuilding From the Inside Out
The journey to rebuild her life has heavily influenced her physical health. The immense stress of losing her grandparents, husband, and father led to a dramatic 40kg weight loss fueled by unhealthy coping mechanisms. Now, she is dedicated to a six-month life and body recomposition journey centered around strength training, balanced nutrition, and fitness.
Teaming up with her partner, a professional powerlifter and coach, she has chosen a natural, disciplined approach to rebuilding her strength. She is refreshingly candid about the reality of the process, noting that real transformation is not a quick fix. There are days filled with tears on the scale and moments of doubt, proving that discipline must often take the wheel when motivation fades.
Ultimately, this physical journey mirrors her psychological healing. It is not a punishment for her body, but rather a powerful investment in the resilient, capable, and athletic woman she is becoming.
