What is Aqueous Vermiculite Dispersion (AVD)?

Aqueous Vermiculite Dispersion (AVD) is an advanced fire extinguishing agent designed to combat lithium-ion battery fires using both fixed and portable application methods.

    NetfloristOfferforge

These fires can be caused by various factors, including physical damage, overheating, short circuits, internal failures, and manufacturing defects. As the use of lithium-ion batteries continues to grow, the risk of such fires increases, making effective fire suppression essential.

    Aqueous Vermiculite Dispersion (AVD)

    What is AVD Made Of?

AVD is a specialized liquid composed of vermiculite, a naturally occurring mineral that contains aluminum, iron, and magnesium in thin, layered flakes.

Through chemical processing, vermiculite is broken down into microscopic particles that remain suspended in water, forming a stable aqueous dispersion. This makes it an ideal fire suppression agent for lithium-ion battery fires.

    Is AVD Environmentally Friendly?

One of AVD’s key advantages is its environmental safety. Vermiculite is a naturally occurring, chemically and physically inert mineral that is exempt from strict environmental regulations (REACH). When exposed to high temperatures, it releases only harmless steam and poses no risk to humans, animals, or plant life.

    How Does AVD Work?

When applied as a fine mist to a lithium-ion battery fire, AVD deposits vermiculite particles onto the burning material, forming a protective layer.

As this layer dries, the overlapping platelet structure creates a non-flammable oxygen barrier between the fuel and the surrounding air. This process not only suppresses the fire but also cools the affected area. As the water in AVD evaporates, the vermiculite particles continue to build up, further isolating the fire and preventing its spread.

Key Benefits of Aqueous Vermiculite Dispersion (AVD)

AVD offers multiple advantages, making it a highly effective fire suppression solution for lithium-ion battery fires:

    • Cooling Effect – The water content in AVD helps to reduce the temperature of the fire.
    • Oxygen Barrier – Vermiculite particles create a protective layer that prevents oxygen from reaching the fire.
    • Non-Conductive – The vermiculite film does not conduct electricity, making it safe for use around electronics.
    • Superior Efficiency – AVD is nearly twice as effective as water for extinguishing Class A fires.
    • Fire Break Capability – It can be applied as a firebreak to contain and stop fire spread.
    • Ease of Deployment – AVD can be used with standard firefighting equipment.
    • Environmentally Friendly – Prevents the release of harmful gases while ensuring safety for people and the environment.

Aqueous Vermiculite Dispersion (AVD) Testing & Certifications

Aqueous Vermiculite Dispersion has been extensively tested by independent third-party laboratories to verify its effectiveness against battery fires. It has received certification from ZSW in Germany and holds the BSI Kitemark for EN3 and SANS1910, along with UL approval.

Additionally, AVD passed the NTA 8133 Kiwa test in the Netherlands, confirming its ability to extinguish lithium-ion battery fires across various application methods.

Why Aqueous Vermiculite Dispersion (AVD) Stands Out

Aqueous Vermiculite Dispersion represents a breakthrough in fire safety, offering a specialized solution for lithium-ion battery fires that traditional extinguishers cannot effectively combat.

Whether in portable extinguishers or fixed systems, AVD encapsulates the fuel source, insulates battery cells, and prevents thermal runaway, making it an essential safety tool in today’s battery-powered world.

SafeQuip’s SANS 1910-2022 approved Lith-Ex fire extinguisher range has been rigorously tested, meeting NTA 8133:2021 (KIWA/POOO55865) standards to confirm its lithium-ion battery fire suppression capabilities.

Available in various sizes to suit different applications, SafeQuip’s Lith-Ex fire extinguishers can be purchased through select retailers and SAQCC-approved servicing agents.
