Over the weekend I attended Capital Craft 2013. It was the first time that Pretoria hosted its very own Craft Beer festival. 12 micro breweries were represented on the day: Boston Breweries, Chameleon Brewhouse, Clarens Brewery, The Cockpit Brewhouse, Copper Lake Breweries, Darling Brew, The Dog and Fig Brewery, Dryman’s, Jack Black Beer, Mitchell’s, the Standhaven Brewery and Three Skulls Brew Works.
Here’s my 2 cents on Capital Craft 2013
My good friend Nino and I arrived at the venue inside the Voortrekker Monument nature reserve at 11 AM. Scanning our tickets and getting tagged went fast and before you could say “Beer” we had a cold Darling Brew in our beer drinking hands. I mingled with Braaiboy, Baas De Beer and the Rebel for a bit before enjoying a cappuccino flavored beer from Three Skulls, a honey flavored Weiss beer from a brewery that I can’t recall, a Clarens beer, a Chameleon Brewery beer, a Jack Black and a few other tasty brews that I can’t really recall.
You’re probably sensing that the vibe at Capital Craft 2013 was incredible and you’re not wrong with your assessment. Bands like Kwas, Vana & The Oh So Serious and Tidal Waves did not disappoint. There was also laughter during the Deep Fried man set and festive vibes during the Michael Lesar Swing DJ sets. I did not see one grumpy looking person and it was great seeing some older folks coming out for a change as well.

Capital Craft 2013 was well organized. Kudos to Johan, Niel, Henk, Willie, Rachelle and everyone else that was involved with the organization. 2000 tickets were sold before the event and another 500 tickets were sold out before 1 PM.
The organizers decided to cap the attendance to ensure that the lines for tokens, food and beer did not frustrate festival goers. Sadly some people had to be turned away, but they should not feel too sad because they missed out, there might be another event of this kind coming before the end of 2013, so watch this space.
