Minecraft, a sandbox video game created by Swedish video game company Mojang Studios, was officially launched in 2011.

Minecraft has a blocky, procedurally generated 3D world that players explore. The main gameplay involves harvesting raw materials to craft tools and construct buildings or machines. Players can choose different game modes like survival mode where they must maintain health, creative mode with unlimited resources, or hardcore mode with increased difficulty.

The game allows both single-player gameplay against hostile mobs and multi-player cooperation or competition. A major aspect is the vast array of user-created mods, servers, skins and more that greatly expand the base game’s possibilities. Overall, it provides an open-ended virtual sandbox for mining, building, and shared creativity.

There’s probably a lot that you don’t know about this game (which is the 4th most played game in April 2024), but today my aim is to change that…

Here are 12 Interesting Facts You Might Not Know about Minecraft

1. The game can be played on PlayStation 3, PlayStation Vita, Wii U, Windows Phone, New Nintendo 3DS, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Windows, Xbox One, Mac, iOS, Android, Linux and Xbox 360.

2. According to data from May 2024, the enduring popularity of Minecraft was highlighted by its ranking at number 10 among the most-watched games on the streaming platform Twitch, accumulating an impressive 25.5 million viewer hours for that month.

3. Microsoft acquired Mojang Studios and the rights to the Minecraft franchise in 2014 for a staggering $2.5 billion.

Since then, the game’s universe has expanded with several spin-off titles like Minicraft, Minecraft: Story Mode, the augmented reality game Minecraft Earth, the dungeon crawler Minecraft Dungeons, and the upcoming strategy game Minecraft Legends.

Furthermore, a live-action Minecraft movie adapted directly from the game is slated for a theatrical release in 2025, aiming to bring the iconic blocky world to the big screen.

4. The game was the brainchild of Markus “Notch” Persson.

5. The game’s educational potential has been recognized to the extent that in 2013, the Viktor Rydberg Secondary School in Sweden made it a mandatory part of the curriculum for all 13-year-old students.

According to a teacher, through Minecraft, students learned valuable skills like urban planning, understanding environmental concerns, project management, and long-term planning.

The immersive virtual world provided an engaging way to impart these practical lessons. Imagine students being able to unwind after a long day of academics by diving back into the blocky realm of the game.

6. The rarest item in the game is the Dragon Egg. It only appears after defeating the Ender Dragon, at which point the Dragon Egg will spawn on the exit portal.

7. The game was originally nicknamed Cave Game before the creator decided on Minecraft.

8. When you load up the game, there is a 0.01% chance that the introductory menu will briefly display a typo in the game’s title, showing “Minceraft” instead.

9. You can prevent people from crossing the world border by constructing invisible blocks.

10. The Creeper originated from a coding mistake. According to a Minecraft developer responding to a fan’s question about its origins, while creating a pig, they inadvertently mixed up the height and length values. This error led to the creation of the iconic Creeper.

11. In the game, you have the option to consume spider’s eyes if you choose to do so. However, it’s advisable to avoid eating raw chicken as it has the potential to poison you.

12. In the world of Minecraft, pumpkins are considered more valuable than white diamonds because they are more difficult to locate.
