UK-born, South Africa-based singer-songwriter GAZ has released his latest single and music video, “Moving On”, delivering one of the most emotionally honest moments of his solo career so far.

The release follows the international attention received by his 2025 album My New Skin and continues to showcase his growth as an artist unafraid to explore deeply personal themes.

At its heart, “Moving On” is rooted in real-life experience. The song was written during a period of separation from his wife of nearly 26 years, capturing a moment filled with reflection, loss, and change. Rather than leaning into conflict or bitterness, GAZ approaches the subject with restraint and clarity, focusing instead on acceptance and the quiet resilience required to move forward.

The result is a track that feels both personal and universal, offering something relatable to anyone navigating major life changes while holding onto what still matters.

A Song Born From Raw Emotion

“Moving On” came together organically during a late-night session with producer Mark Beling. What began as an improvised acoustic progression quickly sparked an immediate lyrical response from GAZ, recorded instinctively as a voice note in a single take.

That spontaneous recording became the emotional core of the final track. Instead of rebuilding the song from scratch, the production was layered carefully around the original performance. This approach helped preserve the honesty and immediacy of the moment while adding subtle musical textures that enhance the track without overwhelming it.

Musically, the song sits comfortably within GAZ’s alternative pop rock style. Acoustic guitar leads the arrangement, supported by understated synth elements and bass. The production remains deliberately restrained, allowing the vocals and storytelling to remain front and centre.

There’s a careful emotional balance throughout the track, blending melancholy with warmth to reflect the layered emotions behind its story.

A Chorus That Reflects Emotional Growth

One of the defining features of “Moving On” is its evolving chorus. The lyrics shift from “I’ll be fine” to “Moving On” and ultimately to “Me and My Son.” This gradual progression mirrors the emotional journey within the song, moving from reassurance to acceptance and finally toward a grounded sense of forward motion.

It’s a subtle songwriting technique, but one that adds emotional weight and reinforces the song’s message of resilience and personal growth.

Reflecting on the creative process, GAZ has described the track as beginning in a moment of intense emotional release before evolving into something more balanced and reflective. What started as instinct eventually took shape through perspective, resulting in a song that prioritises understanding and growth over blame.

A Defining Release in GAZ’s Solo Catalogue

Now available across major streaming platforms, along with both a music video and lyric video, “Moving On” stands as a significant moment in GAZ’s solo journey. It captures the reality of letting go while offering a sense of calm, acceptance, and forward movement.

The release further cements his reputation for creating music that speaks to real-life experiences with sincerity and emotional depth.

From CRUSH Frontman to Solo Artist

GAZ, born Garry McCluskey, first made his mark as the frontman of the 1990s South African rock band CRUSH. During that time, he built a strong reputation on stage and in the studio, performing alongside several respected South African artists and achieving chart success.

After stepping away from the spotlight for several years, he returned to songwriting in 2020, launching his solo career under the GAZ name. Working closely with SAMA-winning producer Mark Beling, he began crafting a sound that blends alternative rock energy with melodic pop influences.

This creative partnership led to the release of My New Skin in March 2025. The album was introduced through a series of singles released over four years, several of which performed strongly on radio charts. Tracks such as “Slow Down” reached No. 1 in North Carolina in the United States, while “Lullaby For The World” and “Dopamine” both secured Top 10 positions in South Africa. “Pay To Breathe” also reached the SA Top 20, with additional songs gaining national radio exposure.

The album My New Skin also received strong international praise, including recognition from respected music journalists such as Ricardo Durán, Editor-in-Chief of Rolling Stone en Español, and Amanda Peukert, a contributing writer for SPIN Magazine.

With “Moving On”, GAZ continues to build on that momentum, delivering music that feels honest, reflective, and deeply human.
