UK-born and now South African-based singer-songwriter GAZ has unveiled his latest single and lyric video, “My New Skin.”
Produced by SAMA award-winner Mark Beling, this track serves as the title piece of his upcoming album and marks a pivotal chapter in both GAZ’s personal and musical evolution.
“My New Skin” explores themes of personal growth and transformation, offering listeners a profound and introspective journey. Initially written before his wife Kim’s breast cancer diagnosis, the song has since taken on added meaning, reflecting her brave battle and recovery.
GAZ describes the track as a liberating experience, shedding layers of pain, anxiety, and fear, and embracing a future filled with love, light, and hope.
“I’ve always written about love, life, loss, and renewal,” GAZ explains. “This time, the inspiration came from deep within, like a letter to myself, both past and present. ‘My New Skin’ is about letting go of the past and stepping into a future filled with warmth and love. Although the journey is personal, I hope it inspires others to reflect on their own paths and find renewal in their lives.”
The creation of “My New Skin” was not without challenges. Shortly after recording began, GAZ and his family faced Kim’s diagnosis. Despite the upheaval, the recording continued, with Mark Beling’s production capturing the raw emotion behind the song.
“Recording ‘My New Skin’ was seamless,” GAZ recalls. “Mark added incredible atmosphere, especially with the guitar and ambient layers. We recorded it at his studio, but once Kim’s illness was diagnosed, everything else took a backseat. Still, the song came together beautifully, as if it was always meant to reflect this moment in our lives.”
