Playtopia, Africa’s leading indie games and immersive arts festival and summit, is back this December 2025. Drawing over 1,000 festival-goers, it has become a unique celebration of video games and interactive experiences across the continent.
Festival design is already underway, led by Natasha Davidson (Africa Burn, Bazique), who is creating ‘Arcadia’ – a fantasy-inspired library filled with portholes, spell books, potions, and magic crystals. The installation promises to transport attendees deep into the playful realms of childhood imagination.

Games, Art, and Cutting-Edge Experiences
Festival-goers can explore the latest games at Arcadia, including the premiere of Teamlazerbeam’s Shroom and Gloom, developed in collaboration with Devolver Digital.
The game will feature its own large-scale shroom tunnel and cave, adding an immersive element to the experience. Returning highlights include the Super Friendship Arcade with custom-controller experiences, the Indie Planet Exhibition showcasing standout games from BCN Games Fest (Barcelona), Freeplay (Australia), Bitsummit (Japan), and A.Maze (Germany), and a lineup of international speakers such as Abubakar Salim (UK), Iris Compiet (NL), Doug Wilson (AUS), Meg Clarke (UK), and Seth S. Smith (US).
The Art Massive Brings New Depth to Playtopia
This year, Playtopia enters a new chapter with immersive art installations curated by The Art Massive, a community of interactive artists co-founded by the festival director.
The group has been building connections through workshops, jams, and meetups, strengthening the grassroots spirit that has long defined the local gaming scene. Their installations will add a collaborative and creative energy to the festival floor, elevating the overall experience for attendees.
Spotlighting African Talent on the Global Stage
Playtopia is more than a festival – it’s a movement positioning South Africa and Africa as key players in indie games and immersive arts. By showcasing African developers gaining international recognition, the festival provides a vital platform for local talent.
Playtopia bridges disciplines and borders, bringing together game developers, immersive artists, and international partners to exchange ideas and elevate African creativity. Year-round initiatives, including workshops, jams, and mentorship, nurture emerging talent and ensure a sustainable pipeline of innovators.
The Playtopia Foundation and Community Impact
At the heart of Playtopia is the Playtopia Foundation, which supports creators and increases access to game development and immersive arts.
The foundation runs mentorship programmes, grants, workshops, and outreach initiatives that empower underrepresented voices and help cultivate the next generation of African game developers. Through these efforts, Playtopia becomes more than just an event – it becomes a catalyst for meaningful change within the industry.
