    Remember 2014? From groundbreaking scientific achievements to pivotal political shifts, this was a year that kept us on our toes.

    Let’s take a stroll down memory lane and revisit some events that made headlines and left lasting impressions.

     

    Here are 20 Notable Events That Happened in 2014

    1. In March 2014, Russia’s annexation of Crimea marked a significant geopolitical shift. The move followed a controversial referendum and was met with international condemnation, leading to sanctions and heightened tensions between Russia and Western nations.

    2. On the 8th of March 2014, Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370 vanished en route from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing, carrying 239 people. Despite extensive search efforts, the aircraft’s disappearance remains one of aviation’s greatest mysteries.

    3. The Ebola virus outbreak that began in March 2014 became the largest in history, primarily affecting Guinea, Liberia, and Sierra Leone.

    The epidemic resulted in over 28,000 cases and more than 11,000 deaths, prompting a global health emergency.

    4. On September 18, 2014, Scotland held a referendum on independence from the United Kingdom. With a turnout of 84.6%, 55.3% voted against independence, keeping Scotland within the UK.

    5. The shooting of Michael Brown, an unarmed Black teenager, by a police officer in Ferguson, Missouri sparked nationwide protests and discussions about racial inequality and police brutality in the United States.

    6. In May of this year, Narendra Modi led the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to a historic victory in India’s general elections, becoming the country’s 14th Prime Minister. His campaign focused on economic development and governance reforms.

    7. In April 2014, the militant group Boko Haram abducted 276 schoolgirls from Chibok, Nigeria. The incident drew global outrage and the #BringBackOurGirls campaign, highlighting issues of terrorism and women’s rights.

    8. In November 2014, the European Space Agency’s Rosetta mission achieved a historic first by landing the Philae probe on Comet 67P, providing unprecedented data about these celestial bodies.

    9. In February 2014, Facebook announced its acquisition of the messaging app WhatsApp for $19 billion, marking one of the largest tech deals and expanding Facebook’s global communication reach.

    10. In November 2014, Sony Pictures suffered a massive cyberattack, leading to leaked confidential data and the temporary cancellation of the film The Interview. The U.S. government attributed the attack to North Korea.

    11. In 2014, the U.S. Department of Agriculture approved Arctic Apples, the first genetically modified apples that resist browning, sparking discussions about GMOs and food technology.

    12. During this year’s Academy Awards ceremony, host Ellen DeGeneres took a star-studded selfie that quickly became the most retweeted tweet at the time, showcasing the power of social media.

    13. The world mourned the loss of beloved actor and comedian Robin Williams, who died in August 2014. His passing sparked conversations about mental health and depression.

    14. In July 2014, Germany clinched the FIFA World Cup title in Brazil, defeating Argentina 1-0 in the final and showcasing a dominant performance throughout the tournament.

    15. Transformers: Age of Extinction was the biggest grossing film of the year. The film earned $1.104 billion at the box office.

    16. Guardians of the Galaxy was a surprise hit from Marvel Studios in this year. The space adventure blended action, humor, and a killer retro soundtrack — and turned obscure comic book characters into household names. It earned more than $700 million at the box office.

    17. One of the most-critically acclaimed films of this year was Whiplash. It’s a tense, drum-driven story about ambition and abuse in a music conservatory, featuring a powerful performance by J.K. Simmons.

    18. South Africa held its fifth democratic general election on the 7th of May 2014. The ANC (African National Congress) retained power, winning 62.15% of the vote.

    19. In September of this year, Oscar Pistorius was found guilty of culpable homicide (not murder) for the 2013 shooting of his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp.

    20. South African born Comedian Trevor Noah was gaining momentum in this year, appearing regularly on The Daily Show, before being announced as Jon Stewart’s successor in 2015.
