Wondering which documentaries you can stream on Showmax? Don’t stress, three eye-opening ones are streaming on Showmax this month.
Here are 3 Documentaries You Can Stream on Showmax in July 2024
1. The Anarchists – Streaming on Showmax from 10 July 2024
HBO and Blumhouse Productions, known for Get Out, present The Anarchists, a documentary series chronicling the evolution of an annual gathering in Acapulco, Mexico.
What starts as a meeting of idealists, outlaws, and cryptocurrency enthusiasts transforms into a sprawling anarchist community. However, their ambitious experiment in radical self-governance proves far more treacherous than anticipated.
The six-part series spans six years, documenting a chain of bizarre and lethal incidents stemming from a spontaneous 2015 assembly. This gathering aimed to promote anarchy in its purest form—a philosophy advocating the abolition of government in favor of absolute individual autonomy.
The Anarchists offers intimate, firsthand accounts from key figures, including Jeff Berwick, a Canadian entrepreneur-turned-reluctant movement leader; Lisa and Nathan Freeman, activism-driven parents seeking freedom in Mexico; and John Galton and Lily Forester, Americans fleeing drug-related charges.
These stories, among others, paint a vivid picture of the movement’s complex dynamics and unforeseen consequences.
2. School Ties – Streaming on Showmax from 13 July 2024
IdeaCandy, creators of Devilsdorp and Tracking Thabo Bester, teams up with Steinheist director Richard Gregory to produce School Ties.
This documentary series exposes the sexual abuse and grooming of students in South Africa’s elite boys’ schools, exploring victims’ trauma, the pervasive culture of silence, and the responses from authorities, educational institutions, and society.
The four-part series investigates several tragic cases: the suicide of 16-year-old Thomas Kruger at St Andrew’s College in Makhanda; the alleged normalization of violent and sexual behavior by a former Parktown Boys’ High School educator; and Julio Mordoh’s suicide, a decade after alleged abuse by his school sports coach.
The final episode uncovers a network of school coaches accused of sex crimes, featuring insights from Colonel Heila Niemand of the South African Police Service, who led the investigation.
School Ties offers guidance on recognizing signs of abuse and includes expert perspectives from child protection specialists.
Featured experts include Childline South Africa CEO Dumisile Nala, Child Protection and Development specialist Luke Lamprecht, clinical psychologist Marita Rademeyer, child protection activist and journalist Robyn Wolfson Vorster, and Deon Wiggett, author of My Only Story: The Hunt for a Serial Paedophile.
Cape Town Today praises the series: “School Ties serves as an urgent call for action and a beacon of hope for the countless victims who have been silenced for far too long… We can only hope that this series will act as a catalyst for significant change.”
3. Endangered – Streaming on Showmax from 24 July 2024
Endangered, a Tribeca Film Festival selection, follows four journalists over a year as they work in ostensibly democratic nations where press freedom has traditionally been assumed.
The documentary explores how the proliferation of online misinformation and world leaders’ open criticism of the media have led to increased distrust in traditional news sources, forcing journalists to face dangers typically associated with war zones or authoritarian regimes.
This HBO documentary is helmed by Oscar nominees Rachel Grady and Heidi Ewing, known for The Boys of Baraka and Jesus Camp. Ronan Farrow, recipient of the International Documentary Association’s Truth to Power Award and 2018 Pulitzer Prize winner for his Harvey Weinstein exposé, serves as executive producer.
Endangered boasts a perfect 100% critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes. The Times (UK) describes it as a “thoughtful, depressing and, if you’re a journalist, utterly enraging documentary,” adding, “Actually scrub that… [it] should be disturbing for everyone capable of critical thought.”
Variety notes, “You can tell the filmmakers, like their subjects, are struggling to suppress a scream.”
