There are different types of writing styles. Some of them incorporate direct language and short sentences while others incorporate simple words. While you need to preserve your unique tone, you can improve your style and create articles that truly engage readers. Here are a few tips for improving it.
Understanding Different Writing Styles
Each of us has our own unique writing style. So what exactly does writing style mean? It’s the tone and voice a writer uses to express an idea or convey a story. We all have our own personal style based on how we use words, the level of formality, sentence structure and the overall approach towards writing. For instance, business writing requires formal language whereas blogging has a casual tone.
4 Types of Writing Styles
You can classify this into four different categories. These styles are differentiated by purpose. As a writer, you will use one of these styles while incorporating your own style into your article:
1. Persuasive writing: It tries to influence the reader to adapt to your point of view. Examples include a letter of recommendation, cover letters and academic writing.
2. Narrative writing: It has characters, a setting and a plot and is extensively used in creative writing. It’s the style that’s used to create screenplays, novellas, novels, etc.
3. Descriptive writing: It uses sensory details and figurative language to paint the picture in the reader’s mind. This writing style is generally used by poets.
4. Expository writing: It’s used to deliver information and facts rather than storytelling. News articles, technical writing, scientific writing and nonfiction books are all examples of this writing style.
