1. House Of The Dragon Season 2 – Available to stream on Showmax from 5 August 2024
“The dragons dance and men are like dust under their feet,” declares Ser Criston Cole (Fabien Frankel) as the trailer for Monday’s epic Season 2 finale of House of the Dragon begins. “We march now towards our annihilation.” The HBO trailer on YouTube ominously states, “There will be no mercy.”
Recently honored as one of IMDb‘s 10 Top-Rated Shows of 2024 So Far, House of the Dragon Season 2 boasts an 89% critics’ rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Its fourth episode, the highest-rated yet on IMDb with a 9.5/10 score, has drawn widespread comparisons to the infamous Red Wedding episode of Game of Thrones.
While Game of Thrones reigns as the most awarded show in Emmys history, with six entries in The Guinness Book of World Records, House of the Dragon is proving a worthy successor.
Its Emmy-winning first season claimed Best TV Series – Drama at the 2023 Golden Globes and was crowned the best-reviewed series of 2022 at Rotten Tomatoes‘ Golden Tomato Awards.
The Seattle Times praises Season 2: “House of the Dragon evolves into such smart, thrilling and heartbreaking storytelling that it threatens to become the rare prequel that outshines the original.”
Following the Season 2 premiere that propelled Max to its most-watched day ever, House of the Dragon has secured a renewal for a third season.
2. Fargo Season 5 – Streaming on Showmax from 13 August 2024
The first four seasons of Fargo collectively garnered six Emmy Awards, while the original film that inspired the series claimed two Oscars.
The latest installment of this acclaimed crime anthology is now in contention for 15 more Emmy Awards, including Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series, as well as Writing and Directing accolades for creator Noah Hawley.
Set in 2019, this season’s narrative follows Midwestern housewife Dorothy ‘Dot’ Lyon, who finds herself embroiled in legal troubles and thrust back into a life she believed she had left behind.
Three-time Emmy nominee Juno Temple (Ted Lasso) portrays Dot, while Emmy winner Jon Hamm (Mad Men) plays the sheriff who has long been on her trail. Both actors are nominated for Emmys for their lead roles, with Lamorne Morris (Winston in New Girl) also receiving a Supporting Actor nomination.
Season 5 has earned a 93% critics’ rating on Rotten Tomatoes, where the consensus reads: “A back-to-basics caper populated by the likes of a mesmerising Juno Temple and a thick slice of Hamm, Fargo’s fifth season is a superb return to peak form.”
3. The Sympathizer Season 1 – Streaming on Showmax from 12 August 2024
Adapted from Viet Thanh Nguyen’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, The Sympathizer chronicles the journey of a half-French, half-Vietnamese communist spy during the final days of the Vietnam War and his subsequent life as a refugee in Los Angeles, where he discovers his espionage career is far from over.
Hoa Xuande (Cowboy Bebop) leads a predominantly Vietnamese cast, with Oscar winner Robert Downey Jr. earning an Emmy nomination for his multiple roles.
The supporting ensemble includes Golden Globe winners Sandra Oh (Killing Eve, Grey’s Anatomy) and David Duchovny (The X Files, Californication), as well as John Cho (from the Harold & Kumar and Star Trek franchises).
This HBO/A24 co-production ranks #10 on Metacritic‘s list of the Best TV Shows (So Far) This Year and boasts an 88% critics’ rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Time Magazine hails it as “ambitious, brilliant television,” while Rolling Stone describes it as “wickedly funny [and] deeply moving,” declaring, “The Sympathizer turns a bestseller adaptation into a TV tour de force.”
The Sympathizer is co-created by Cannes winners Park Chan-wook (Oldboy) and Don McKellar (Last Night), with Chan-wook, Oscar nominee Fernando Meirelles (City of God), and triple BAFTA winner Marc Munden (Utopia) each helming episodes.
4. Apples Never Fall Season 1 – Streaming on Shomwax from 12 August 2024
Based on the bestselling novel by Big Little Lies author Liane Moriarty, Apples Never Fall focuses on Stan and Joy, a couple who have recently sold their successful tennis academy and are poised to enjoy their golden years.
Their lives take an unexpected turn when a wounded young woman knocks on their door, bringing with her the excitement they’ve been missing.
Four-time Oscar nominee Annette Bening, who plays Joy, won Best Actress at Series Mania this year for her performance. She stars opposite Emmy winner Sam Neill (Jurassic Park) as Stan.
The cast also includes Emmy nominee Jake Lacy (The White Lotus) and Alison Brie (GLOW) as their adult children. As the story unfolds, they are compelled to re-examine their parents’ seemingly perfect marriage when the family’s darkest secrets begin to surface.
5. House Of Gods – Streaming on Showmax from 13 August 2024
House of Gods chronicles the lives of an ambitious Iraqi Australian family grappling with newfound power and privilege when their charismatic patriarch is elected Head Cleric of their local mosque.
Palestinian actor Kamel El Basha, portraying Sheikh Mohammad, won Best Actor at Series Mania in France earlier this year. Award-winning Australian actor, screen-writer and series co-creator Osamah Sami co-stars as Isa, alongside an all Arab-Australian supporting cast.
This drama series takes us behind the walls of the imam’s family and the community he leads as he implements his vision of a modern Islam.
As his grand ambitions become reality, those closest to him begin to question whether he is acting solely for the greater good or if he has become intoxicated by power. A tale of faith, family, secrets and lies, the six-episode series explores the significant personal cost of ambition.
Deadline headlined their review: “Australia’s House Of Gods started out as The Sopranos in a mosque, channelled Succession and ended up in a category all of its own.”
6. Dr. Death Season 2 – Streaming on Showmax from 19 August 2024
The inaugural season of Dr. Death received nominations for Best Limited Series at the Critics Choice Awards and Best Horror Series at the Critics Choice Super Awards, among other accolades.
The true-crime anthology series returns with a new focus: “Miracle Man” Paolo Macchiarini, a charismatic surgeon renowned for his innovative operations.
When investigative journalist Benita Alexander approaches him for a story, the line between personal and professional begins to blur, forever altering her life.
As she uncovers the lengths Paolo will go to protect his secrets, a group of doctors halfway across the world make shocking discoveries that call everything about Paolo into question.
Emmy nominees Edgar Ramirez (The Assassination of Gianni Versace) and Mandy Moore (This is Us) co-star in this season.
Dr. Death S2 has garnered an 80% critics’ rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The Daily Beast observes, “Dr. Death works by playing on the primal fear of betrayal by those who hold our lives in their hands and choose to play not God but the devil. The fact that there are enough such cases to keep a podcast and television series going is disturbing.”
7. Industry Season 3 – Streaming on Showmax from 26 August 2024
Industry S3 is listed among Rotten Tomatoes’ Most Anticipated TV Shows of 2024, drawing Succession comparisons as “HBO’s other whip-smart and acid-tongued drama that’s really a comedy.”
This season introduces new cast members including Emmy nominees Kit Harington (Jon Snow in Game of Thrones) and Sarah Goldberg (Sally Reed in Barry), portraying the CEO of a green tech energy company and a portfolio manager respectively.
Industry offers an insider’s view of high finance, following a group of young bankers as they forge their identities within the pressure cooker environment and sex and drug fueled blitz of international bank Pierpoint & Co’s London office.
In Season 3, Pierpoint looks to the future and takes a big bet on ethical investing. Yasmin (Marisa Abela), Robert (Harry Lawtey), and Eric (Ken Leung) find themselves at the forefront, dealing with Lumi, a green tech energy company led by Sir Henry Muck (Harington).
Harper (Myha’la), having left Pierpoint, is eager to return to the addictive thrill of finance and finds an unlikely partner in FutureDawn portfolio manager Petra Koenig (Goldberg).
Industry boasts an 86% overall critics’ rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Season 2 was hailed as “the most thrilling show on TV” and an “emergent masterpiece” by The Atlantic; “the first great Gen Z workplace drama” by GQ; “the missing link between Euphoria and Succession” by Vanity Fair; “one of the best workplace series of the 21st century” by The AV Club; and for having “the most exciting performances on television” by Vogue.
8. The Tattooist of Auschwitz – Streaming on Showmax from 29 August 2024
Inspired by the real-life story of Jewish Holocaust survivors Lali and Gita Sokolov, The Tattooist of Auschwitz is a six-part historical drama based on the bestselling novel by Heather Morris.
Arriving in Auschwitz-Birkenau in 1942, Lali (Jonah Hauer-King from The Little Mermaid and World on Fire) becomes one of the tattooists charged with inking identification numbers onto fellow prisoners’ arms.
He meets Gita (Anna Próchniak) while tattooing her prisoner number. Under the constant guard of volatile Nazi SS officers, Lali and Gita fall in love and become determined to keep each other alive.
Sixty years later, the recently widowed Lali (Oscar nominee Harvey Keitel from The Piano and The Grand Budapest Hotel), now in his 80s, meets novice writer Heather Morris (Emmy nominee Melanie Lynskey from Yellowjackets).
He finds the courage to share his story, confronting the traumatic ghosts of his youth and reliving his memories of falling in love in the most horrific of places.
Listed among Rotten Tomatoes‘ Most Anticipated TV Shows Of 2024, Variety says, “The Tattooist of Auschwitz puts the dichotomy of the human spirit on full display, showing the possibility of love and the unimaginable monstrosity that hatred can bring.”
Double Oscar winner Hans Zimmer and Kara Talve have been nominated for two Emmys for their score.
