Brazil: 20 Interesting Facts You Might Not Know

Brazil is the largest country in South America and the fifth largest country in the world. Besides being the home of many of the most beautiful models in the world the country also has a rich history. It’s definately one of the countries in South America that I want to visit one day.

Here are 20 Interesting facts about Brazil

1. Brazil declared independence from Portugal in 1822, was only recognized as independent in 1825 and became a republic in 1889.

2. Brazil is the only Portuguese speaking country in South America and shares its borders with every country on the South American continent except Chile and Ecuador.

3. The Copacabana (in Rio de Janeiro) is a 4 km beach which has 63 hotels and 10 hostels spread along it.

4. It’s the only nation who has won the FIFA World Cup 5 times.

5. The country has an estimated population of 216 million people.

6. Contrary to popular belief, Brasilia (with a population of 4.2 million people) is the capital city of the country, not Rio De Janeiro.

7. São Paulo is the largest city in the country (an estimated 22.9 million people live in its metropolitan area). Rio de Janeiro is the 2nd largest city (an estimated 13.9 million people live in its metropolitan area).

8. There are an estimated 38 million phone lines and 14.3 million Internet users in Brazil.

9. More than 210 million people in Brazil have mobile phones (96% of the population).

10. Brazil is also home to the the most species of monkeys and the longest beach in the world (7500 km).

11. The country is 100% Energy Independent. They has been dabbling with Ethanol fuel for cars for over three decades. In the recent decades great advances in the efficiency of ethanol production in the country has lead ethanol to become a primary fuel source for cars.

12. The country has more than 187 million internet users (86% of the population).

13. Brazil operates as a federal republic with a president and a National Congress. The current constitution was enacted in 1988.

14. The country is divided into 26 states and one Federal District, where the capital, Brasília, is located.

15. The country has one of the ten largest economies globally, categorized as an upper-middle-income and newly industrialized country.

16. Capoeira is a traditional Brazilian martial art that combines elements of dance, acrobatics, and music. It originated among enslaved Africans in Brazil and is characterized by fluid movements and rhythmic music. It serves as a form of cultural expression and resistance, symbolizing the fight against oppression while promoting community and cooperation.

17, A traditional Brazilian barbecue that involves grilling various types of meat. It is a social event where friends and family gather to enjoy food and drinks together. Each region has its specialties, such as Acarajé (deep-fried balls made from black-eyed peas) in Bahia and Moqueca (a fish stew) in the coastal areas.

18. Brazilians celebrate New Year’s Eve with unique customs such as wearing white for good luck and jumping seven waves at the beach to bring prosperity for the coming year.

19. The country was one of the first countries to implement electronic voting machines, enhancing the electoral process’s efficiency and security.

20. Brazilian inventor Heine Allemagne invented vanishing spray. This spray is used in football to mark free-kick positions temporarily, helping referees manage the game better.
