How to Make a Lasting Impression During Your Internship

In today’s competitive job market, internships are no longer just a checkbox on a CV. They are often the first real opportunity to turn potential into a profession.

While many interns focus on simply getting through the experience, those who truly stand out approach it as a chance to build a lasting impression from day one.

Annemie Burger - Penquin - Internship

According to Annemie Burger, HR Director at Penquin, success during an internship often comes down to mindset. “An internship is not just about what you learn, it’s about how you show up,” she explains. “The interns who make a lasting impression are the ones who are curious, proactive and willing to go the extra mile, even in the smallest tasks.”

As students and graduates prepare for internship opportunities in 2026, here are some practical ways to stand out, add real value and build a strong professional reputation.

    Master the Basics First

It may be tempting to focus only on big, visible contributions, but consistency in the basics is what builds trust. Showing up on time, meeting deadlines and paying attention to detail are simple habits that carry significant weight.

Reliability is often overlooked, yet it is one of the strongest indicators of professionalism in a fast-paced work environment.

    Be Curious, Not Just Compliant

Interns who ask questions tend to learn faster and contribute more meaningfully. Speaking up when something is unclear shows engagement and a genuine interest in the work.

Curiosity also helps you understand the bigger picture, rather than just completing tasks without context.

    Take Initiative Where You Can

Standing out does not require dramatic gestures. Often, it is about recognising small opportunities to contribute.

If you notice a gap, offer to help. If you have an idea, share it respectfully. Managers tend to notice interns who think beyond their immediate responsibilities and show interest in how everything connects.

    Be Open to Feedback

Feedback is a key part of any internship, but growth depends on how you respond to it.

Constructive input is there to help you improve, not to criticise. Interns who listen, adapt and apply feedback consistently are often the ones who progress the fastest.

    Build Real Relationships

An internship is as much about people as it is about tasks. Taking time to connect with colleagues, observe team dynamics and learn from others can be just as valuable as completing assignments.

These relationships often become important networks as your career develops.

    Stay Authentic and Professional

While professionalism is essential, authenticity matters too. You are not expected to know everything from the start.

What matters is honesty, enthusiasm and a willingness to learn. Being yourself, while maintaining respect and professionalism, helps build trust and credibility.

    Keep Track of Your Achievements

One practical tip is to document your contributions throughout your internship. Keeping a record of projects you’ve worked on, problems you’ve helped solve and results you’ve contributed to can be incredibly valuable.

When it comes time for performance reviews or potential job offers, having a clear list of achievements makes it much easier to demonstrate your value.

    Small Actions, Big Impact

As workplaces continue to evolve, one thing remains constant: attitude and effort matter. For interns looking to make their mark, it is often the small, consistent actions that leave the biggest impression.
