Dave Matthews Band played at SunBet Arena at Time Square Casino in Pretoria on Sunday, the 10th of December 2023 and I was there to experience it.
It was the second time that I’ve seen Dave Matthews Band live and I was privileged to have the opportunity to photograph them again. It’s amazing how fast time passes – they were in South Africa almost exactly 10 years ago (in 2013).
Here’s my 2 cents on the Dave Matthews Band show in Pretoria (on 10 December 2023)
I arrived at the venue early and I was very excited to see this band live again. The band started out their set with “Virginia in the Rain” (a track off the band’s 2018 Come Tomorrow album) and “When The World Ends” (a track off their Everyday album).
Next up the band played “Madman’s Eyes” (a track off their 2023 album), “Gravedigger” (a song that Dave Matthews released in the early 2000s), “Warehouse”, “The Space Between”, “Lie in Our Graves” and “Walk Around the Moon”.
I was transported back to the 1990s when I heard the band play “So Much To Say” and “Too Much” (two tracks off the band’s 1996 album Crash). Next up was “Grace Is Gone”, “Grey Street” and “Jimi Thing” – three of the songs that every Dave Matthews Band superfan knows. After this was “Brick House”, followed by “Everyday” (a track that the band performed with Vusi Mahlasela). It was great seeing Vusi on stage again.
The last 4 songs the band played on the night were “Ants Marching” (a track off their 1994 Under the Table and Dreaming that actually got me up and tapping me feet), “Rye Whiskey”, “Pantala Naga Pampa” and “Rapunzel”.
Kudos to Big Concerts for bringing these boytjies back to South Africa. The crowd wasn’t as big as it was back in 2013, but it was a great vibe. I hope that I get to see them live again in the next 10 years.
