Johannesburg singer-songwriter Angelique Greffrath returns with her most powerful release to date, “Break My Chains.”
A stirring anthem of resilience, liberation, and self-discovery, the track marks a defining moment in the artist’s career, showcasing her signature raspy vocals and emotionally honest songwriting.
Known for her ability to navigate both English and Afrikaans music landscapes, Angelique Greffrath draws from deep rock roots to explore themes of transformation and human connection.
“Break My Chains” serves as a deeply authentic statement about overcoming adversity and reclaiming one’s voice.
“After carrying years of unspoken thoughts, disappointments, self-doubt, and personal battles, I reached a point where everything I had been holding inside could no longer stay silent,” explains Angelique. “The song was born from the realization that sometimes the very things that try to break us ultimately become the catalyst for our freedom.”

An Unfiltered Breakthrough for Angelique Greffrath
Unlike many carefully crafted compositions, the song arrived in a sudden wave of inspiration. “The lyrics poured out in less than twenty minutes,” says Angelique Greffrath. “There was no overthinking, no rewriting, and very little second-guessing. Looking back, it felt less like writing a song and more like documenting a breakthrough in real time.”
To capture this vision, Angelique collaborated with producer Kevin Leicher. The raw emotion was locked in immediately, with all lead vocals and harmonies recorded during the very first studio session. The result, according to Angelique, is her heaviest and most emotionally exposed release to date.
Raw, Defiant, and Liberating
Accompanied by a compelling music video, the release showcases an artist fully embracing her creative identity. By choosing authenticity over approval, Angelique has crafted a song that speaks to anyone who has fought to overcome hardship and rediscover themselves.
Angelique describes the new single in five words: “Raw. Defiant. Liberating. Honest. Unbreakable.” As she steps into this new chapter, “Break My Chains” firmly establishes her as one of South Africa’s most compelling singer-songwriters.
