Pictionary, the beloved party game where art meets wit, has been delighting players of all ages for decades. Since its humble beginnings as a homemade game in the early 1980s, Pictionary has evolved into a global phenomenon, captivating millions with its unique blend of creativity, strategy, and laughter.

From its origins as a simple drawing game to its current status as a cultural icon, Pictionary has left an indelible mark on the world of entertainment. In this article, we’ll delve into the fascinating history and intriguing facts behind this beloved game, exploring its evolution, impact, and enduring popularity.

Pictionary

Not familiar with the game? Here’s how it’s played

The objective of Pictionary is for teams to reach the end of the board by guessing the word or phrase being drawn by their teammate. Gameplay involves each team choosing a drawer who selects a card and draws a picture to represent the word, while teammates try to guess the word.

The board features different squares, including Person/Place/Animal, Object, Action, Difficult, and All Play, where teams compete against each other.

The game includes a one-minute timer and emphasizes teamwork, with players working together to guess the word without verbal communication. Additionally, Pictionary can be played without a board, where teams take turns drawing and guessing words.

1. Pictionary was invented by Robert Angel, a young waiter from Seattle, in the early 1980s. Angel developed the game with his friends, who played a version of “charades on paper” during their weekly gatherings.

2. Angel refined the game concept and recruited two partners, Gary Everson and Terry Langston, to help him launch Angel Games, Inc. They developed the game and its packaging with a $35,000 loan from Angel’s uncle.

3. Pictionary was set to launch on June 1, 1985. However, the printing company was unable to sort the 500,000 game cards, so Angel and his partners hand-sorted them themselves over six days.

4. Despite the initial challenges, the game’s sales began to climb in the fall of 1986. Angel received the first royalty check for $179,000 (equivalent to over $420,000 in today’s money).

5. Pictionary has been translated into multiple languages and has sold over 38 million copies across 60 countries, making it one of the world’s most successful board games.

6. In the 2000s, Angel and his partners sold the company to Mattel for $29 million.

7. The game has become a cultural phenomenon, inspiring various adaptations, including television shows, video games, and online games. It continues to be a popular party game and a staple at game nights.

8. The game’s name comes from combining the words “Picture” and “Dictionary”.

9. In 1988, a charity auction featured celebrity-drawn Pictionary cards, including contributions from George and Barbara Bush, Nancy Reagan, Carol Burnett, Bob Hope, and Lily Tomlin.

10. Pictionary has been adapted into two television game shows, one in 1989 and another in 1997, both featuring celebrities playing against contestants.

11. Pictionary has been released in digital formats, including “Pictionary Air” in 2019, which allows players to draw in the air using a stylus and Chromecast streaming device.

12. In 2011, the game was inducted into the National Toy Hall of Fame in the USA, recognizing its cultural significance and enduring popularity.

13. Robert Angel was motivated to turn his party game into a commercial product after seeing the massive success of Trivial Pursuit in 1983, which proved a non-traditional board game could become a hit.
