Bombardier will be playing at GRIETfest 2016 and this Indie / Nu-disco / Electro / Afrobeat / Techno / Tropical DJ’s set promises to be one of the highlights of this year’s festival.
I had a chat to Bombardier about GRIETfest and a few other things. This is what the Cape Townian boytjie had to say:
Where does the name Bombardier originate from?
I think like most aliases it sort of came about in the moment I actually needed one. I was creating a Soundcloud page and after trying and failing to come up with something, I remembered there was a brand called Bombardier that I always used to mispronounce as a kid. I liked it then, and now I have to deal with almost everyone mispronouncing it.
GRIETfest plays an important role in the alternative electronic music scene locally, but especially so in Joburg. It’s one of very few inner city festivals and it doesn’t have a lot of the distractions or obstacles that come with traditional, outdoor camping festivals; the music is the star of the show essentially.
I do have a fond memory of my first proper festival gig in Cape Town and I was super nervous. A few songs in I notice a fellow in the front row starts singing along, track after track. It helped me relax, though it also took me a while to realise he didn’t know any lyrics (or the songs) but was just freestyling it, which you’ve got to respect.
A lot of music to set up the mood. Some classic House and Disco. New stuff and old stuff. And as mentioned above, some music that’s easy to sing along to, even if you don’t know the words.
