Berlin rewards travelers willing to ditch the guidebook, and Jacaranda FM radio personality Rob Forbes believes the best way to experience the German capital is by slowing down and getting lost in its neighborhoods.
Following a recent trip, he shared his top five ways to discover a different, more authentic side of the city.
Here Rob Forbes’ 5 Things To Do The Next Time You’re in Berlin
1. Stay in Friedrichshain and Live Like a Local
Base yourself in Friedrichshain, Berlin’s gritty eastern district just north of the Spree. While it houses the famous East Side Gallery, the real magic is tucked away on side streets packed with late-night eateries and bars.
Put the map away and let the neighborhood reveal itself organically. It is also exceptionally well-connected by trams and underground trains for easy exploring.
2. See the Brandenburg Gate After Dark
Skip the daytime crowds and tour buses. Visit this iconic monument after dinner, when the square is empty and the gate is illuminated against the night sky. The quiet atmosphere completely transforms the landmark, allowing you to soak in its beauty in total peace.

3. Visit the Berliner Dom
If you only pay for one attraction on Museum Island, make it the Berliner Dom. The grand cathedral boasts an elaborate interior and a massive dome that showcases breathtaking light movement. For panoramic views of the city, climb to the exterior walkway at the very top.
4. Spend a Day at Vabali
For a complete nervous system reset, dedicate a full day to Vabali. Designed like a vast Japanese garden, this sprawling complex features over 15 saunas, pools, and quiet relaxation zones. Just be sure to familiarize yourself with German sauna etiquette before arriving.
5. Relax at a Berlin Swimming Lake
Despite being far from the coast, Berlin offers dozens of swimmable lakes easily accessible by public transport, such as Wannsee and Schlachtensee. Pack a towel, snacks, and a good book, then catch a train out to find a shady spot under a tree for a perfect summer outing.
