TCL is coming out swinging for 2026. After clinching the top spot for Mini LED sales in South Africa during the latter half of 2025, the tech giant is skipping a generation to bring its new SQD-Mini LED (Super Quantum Dot) tech to local shores.
Here’s a breakdown of why your next living room upgrade might be a TCL.
The Tech: What is SQD-Mini LED?
While the industry has been flirting with RGB Mini LED, TCL claims they’ve moved two generations ahead. By pairing a refined blue LED backlight with a new Ultra Colour Filter Panel, they’ve effectively killed “color crosstalk” (where colors bleed into one another).
By the Numbers:
- 33% improvement in color gamut.
- 69% boost in quantum dot precision.
- 10,000 nits peak brightness on flagship models.
- 20,000+ local dimming zones (on the massive 98″ X11L).
Essentially, it’s designed to provide the deep blacks of OLED but with the blinding brightness and longevity (zero burn-in risk) of LED.

Built for the South African Sunlight
We’ve all dealt with the struggle of watching a dark movie scene in a sun-drenched lounge. TCL’s SQD models feature the WHVA 2.0 Ultra Panel with specialized anti-reflection coatings. This means better native contrast and significantly less glare, even when the midday sun is hitting your TV.
Cinema Sound meets High-End Visuals
TCL isn’t just focusing on the glass. Their 2026 flagship lineup will feature Audio by Bang & Olufsen, aiming to provide a full-range, immersive soundstage right out of the box.
The real kicker? They are positioning this as “accessible premium.” The goal is to offer specs that usually command a massive price tag at a point that won’t require a second mortgage.
Mike Chen, General Manager at TCL South Africa, says: “South African consumers deserve premium picture and sound without the premium price tag. SQD-Mini LED will change how South Africans experience movies, sport, and gaming.”
What’s Next?
The SQD-Mini LED tech will debut as part of TCL’s 2026 premium lineup, which will also include a new range of Google Smart Home Appliances.
