Why Traditional Extinguishers Fail on Lithium Battery Fires

You might assume that a standard fire extinguisher—the kind found in homes and workplaces—would be effective against lithium-ion battery fires.

However, these fires are unpredictable, intense, and can ignite without warning. SafeQuip, a leading distributor of fire safety equipment, explores why lithium-ion battery fires are so challenging to control.

    Lith-Ex Fire Extinguishers

    Understanding Lithium-Ion Battery Fires

Lithium-ion batteries are widely used for their high energy density and efficiency, but they can sometimes malfunction or sustain damage. When this happens, a dangerous chain reaction called thermal runaway can occur, leading to a fire.

Here’s a simplified breakdown of how thermal runaway unfolds:

    1. Trigger Event – The battery experiences physical damage, overcharging, or a manufacturing defect.

    2. Release of Hot Gases – The affected battery cells expand and release flammable gases.

    3. Fire Ignition – These gases ignite at high temperatures, spreading the fire to nearby cells and materials.

Why Traditional Fire Extinguishers Fall Short

Standard fire extinguishers work by disrupting the fire triangle—removing heat, oxygen, or fuel. While effective for common fires involving wood, paper, or flammable liquids, they are not designed to handle the unique hazards of lithium-ion battery fires. Here’s why:

    1. Unsuitable Firefighting Agents – Most extinguishers contain water, foam, or dry chemicals, which aren’t effective against the high-energy density of lithium-ion batteries.

    2. Inadequate Cooling – Simply cooling the flames isn’t enough. Lithium-ion fires can reignite if the internal battery reactions aren’t stopped.

    3. Risk of Re-Ignition – Even if the flames are extinguished, the fire can flare up again if thermal runaway continues.

    4. Electrical Conductivity – Many extinguishing agents conduct electricity, posing a risk of short circuits and worsening the situation.

The Solution: Aqueous Vermiculite Dispersion (AVD)

If standard extinguishers aren’t effective, what’s the solution? Lith-Ex Fire Extinguishers, equipped with Aqueous Vermiculite Dispersion (AVD), are specifically designed to tackle lithium-ion battery fires.

    How AVD Works:

    • Made from natural vermiculite and water, AVD cools, encapsulates, prevents propagation, and extinguishes lithium battery fires.
    • It forms a protective layer over the fire, stopping the spread and reducing the chance of re-ignition.

How to Use a Lith-Ex Fire Extinguisher

    1. Stay Calm – Assess the situation before acting.

    2. Grab Your Lith-Ex Extinguisher – Ensure it’s readily available.

    3. Pull the Pin – Hold the extinguisher upright and remove the safety pin.

    4. Aim at the Base – Direct the nozzle at the burning battery, not just the flames.

    5. Squeeze and Cover – Sweep the nozzle side to side to cover the entire battery with AVD, creating a protective layer.

    6. Monitor the Area – Keep watch to ensure the fire doesn’t reignite.

    Certified & Available Now

SafeQuip’s Lith-Ex fire extinguisher range is SANS 1910-2022 approved and carries NTA 8133:2021 (KIWA/P00055865) test approval, proving its effectiveness against lithium-ion battery fires.

Available in various sizes, these extinguishers can be purchased through select retailers and SAQCC-approved servicing agents.
