Review: Sting Live at the SunBet Arena in Pretoria

On the 4th of February I made my way to the SunBet Arena (at Time Square Casino in Pretoria) to watch Sting live. The rock music legend did not disappoint.

Here’s my review of Sting’s show at the SunBet Arena

We arrived at the venue around 6:30 PM and getting in was a breeze (even though the concert was sold out). I walked into the arena to watch and photograph Joe Sumner (who was opening for his dad) and I could sense the magic in the air. 8500 people were eagerly waiting for the arrival of Sting (who last played on a South African stage in 2012).

At 8 PM Sting (who turned 71 in 2022) started out his set with the The Police track “Message In A Bottle”. It didn’t take me long to realise that he still has it in him to play a kick-ass live show. Next up was “Englishman In New York” (a track that was on Sting’s second studio album which was released in 1987) and this was followed by The Police classic “Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic”.

Sting and his band showcased his solo career for the next 8 songs, playing hits like “If I Ever Lose My Faith In You”, “Fields Of Gold” and “Brand New Day”. After this he played 3 The Police tracks (“Wrapped Around Your Finger”, “Walking On The Moon” and “So Lonely”).

Next “Desert Rose” transported us back to 1999 before were transported even further back in time for two classic tracks by The Police that Sting played with his son (“King Of Pain” and “Every Breath You Take”).

Sting ended his set with an Encore that featured the classic 1978 The Police track “Roxanne” and “Fragile” (a track off his second studio album Nothing Like the Sun).

Kudos to Big Concerts for the tickets and the opportunity to photograph one of the people that I consider to be a music legend.
