How to get the most from a gap year

A gap year isn’t just an opportunity to unwind and have fun—it can be a transformative experience that fosters personal growth, cultural awareness, and professional development.

For many young South Africans, the biggest challenge is the cost. Flights and the weak Rand against major currencies make traveling to popular destinations like Europe, the UK, the USA, and Australia expensive.

Gavyn Letley from specialist loan provider DirectAxis emphasizes that turning the dream of an overseas adventure into reality begins with setting a budget. “This may not seem like the most exciting way to start your journey, but it’s essential. Proper financial planning reduces the stress of money worries and the risk of cutting your trip short, allowing you to fully embrace the experience.” he says.

While budgeting for the unknown can be tricky, Letley suggests starting with expected expenses such as:

    • Airfares
    • Visa costs
    • Travel insurance—essential for medical emergencies, cancellations, or theft
    • Local transport
    • Accommodation
    • Meals
    • A contingency fund for unexpected costs

It’s also important to research the cost of living in your chosen destination, as it may be significantly higher than in South Africa.

Once you have a clear picture of the costs for your gap year, you can explore funding options

Common strategies for gap year funding options include:

    • Finding a part-time or full-time job
    • Working while traveling—paid internships provide valuable experience and extra income, while au pairing can cover accommodation and meals
    • Volunteering or enrolling in educational programs—these may not offer a salary but often include meals and housing

If the planning process feels overwhelming or you’re unsure about potential employers or programs, specialist agencies can help.

Working with an agency offers several advantages:

    • Assistance with visa applications and work permits
    • Access to employer networks, making it easier to secure seasonal jobs in hospitality, au pairing, or teaching
    • Vetting of employers and job programs to reduce the risk of scams or poor working conditions
    • Some agencies arrange accommodation and provide 24/7 emergency support
    • Cultural orientation and integration tips

Before committing to an agency or paying any fees, Letley advises verifying its credentials—ideally through someone who has used their services—and comparing costs, as some charge high placement fees.

Keep in mind that agencies may focus on specific industries, so researching job opportunities independently could give you more flexibility.

Thorough preparation will make your gap year smoother and more enjoyable

While abroad, managing your finances wisely will help you stretch your budget. Consider:

    • Opening a travel-friendly bank account with low foreign transaction fees, especially if you plan to visit multiple countries
    • Using budgeting apps to track expenses and prevent overspending
    • Taking advantage of student and other discounts—many attractions are cheaper if booked in advance, and public transport passes often offer better value than single tickets

“A gap year can be a valuable investment, helping young people gain independence, broaden their perspectives, develop character, acquire new skills, and gain experience that enhances their careers,” says Letley.
