Anton Edwards Releases “You Don’t Really Know Me”

Seasoned South African singer-songwriter Anton Edwards has officially released his long-requested live favourite, “You Don’t Really Know Me,” transforming a crowd-loved stage staple into an emotionally charged, club-ready pop single shaped across more than 1,500 live performances.

Anton Edwards writes songs that evolve in real time, and “You Don’t Really Know Me” is proof. Originally written as an acoustic guitar piece 17 years ago, the track became a defining communal moment at his shows, with audiences singing the chorus back night after night until the demand for a studio version became undeniable.

The new recording preserves the song’s intimate core while expanding it into contemporary electronic and club-influenced production. What begins with sparse, confessional piano and warm, expressive vocals gradually builds into a propulsive chorus designed for both radio airplay and dancefloors.

Emotion Meets Movement

This is music for listeners who want to feel deeply and move freely. Lyrically, “You Don’t Really Know Me” explores the gradual erosion of trust within a relationship that still holds love at its centre. Musically, it balances warmth and grit, pairing piano-led verses with textured club beats, all anchored by Anton’s commanding yet vulnerable vocal delivery.

It is that duality – storyteller and frontman – shaped by years on stage, that has made the song a live highlight for nearly two decades. The studio version carries the quiet authority of an artist who has earned every listener, one performance at a time.

Reflecting on the release, Anton Edwards shares: “‘You Don’t Really Know Me’ felt like a living thing long before we recorded it. Crowds made the chorus theirs and the song grew with every show. Releasing it now gives the song the production it deserved while keeping the thing that made people hold on to it. It is about being seen and not being seen at the same time.”

Anton Edwards: From God’s Zoo to Solo Success

Anton Edwards first gained prominence as the frontman and songwriter for the innovative rock band God’s Zoo. Their single “War” climbed to number three on 5FM’s Modern Rock Chart, competing alongside major international acts. Another original track, “Shine,” earned a Top 10 finalist position in the national Coca-Cola and Virgin Records Songwriting Competition, further solidifying his credentials as a songwriter.

Expanding his creative reach, Anton co-founded the Afrikaans alternative project Werkloos with long-time collaborator Michael Raubenheimer. Their EP ’n Hart vir Gillooly’s received critical acclaim for its melodic depth and intelligent lyricism.

The debut single “Enkeling” entered at number one on East Rand Stereo and enjoyed strong regional radio rotation. The duo’s growing influence led to their appointment as official brand ambassadors for Audiosure South Africa, endorsing Wharfedale, Samson, and Allen & Heath.

Anton also wrote and composed the official Mighty Woman Global 2026 anthem, “You Are Called,” highlighting his ability to craft music with both emotional resonance and cultural significance.

What’s Next: Strangelove and Beyond

“You Don’t Really Know Me” features on the upcoming re-released solo album Strangelove. His second full-length album, Where I Go, There I Am, is set for release later in 2026, marking the next chapter in a career defined by longevity, evolution, and a consistent connection with audiences.

Throughout his career, Anton Edwards has shared stages with and opened for some of South Africa’s most respected acts, including Just Jinjer, The Parlotones, Prime Circle, Springbok Nude Girls, Watershed, Wonderboom, Mean Mr Mustard, Jesse Clegg, Mark Haze, and many others – steadily building a reputation as a dynamic, versatile, and enduring presence in the South African music landscape.
