In case you did not know, Clarens is a small town in the Free State province of South Africa. There’s probably a lot that you don’t know about this town (which actually has a rich and interesting history), but today my aim is to change that.

Here are 13 Interesting Facts you might not know about Clarens

1. Clarens was established in 1912 and named after the town of Clarens in Switzerland where exiled ZAR President Paul Kruger spent his last days.

2. The town (which is is nestled at the foothills of the Maluti Mountains) is nicknamed the “Jewel of the Eastern Free State”. It gets its nickname thanks to its stunning natural landscapes, surrounded by mountains, valleys, and sandstone cliffs.

3. The town is located 336 km (208 miles) from Johannesburg, 284 km from Bloemfontein (176 miles), and 389 km from Durban (241 miles).

4. Clarens was founded after two farms called “Leliehoek” and “Naauwpoort” were bought and divided into stands that were sold for fifty pounds each.

5. The village was named in honor of President Kruger’s influence in the area. He had defeated the Basotho at the Battle of Naauwpoortnek during the Free State-Basotho War of 1865-1866.

6. Clarens is well-known for its thriving art scene, with numerous galleries, studios, and craft shops. It attracts artists, photographers, and visitors seeking inspiration.

7. The town is a hotspot for outdoor enthusiasts. Popular activities include hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding, and fly-fishing. The nearby Golden Gate Highlands National Park offers stunning hiking trails and wildlife viewing opportunities.

8. The town is also known for its craft breweries and the production of local wines, attracting food and drink enthusiasts.

9. The town hosts several annual events, including the Clarens Craft Beer Festival, Clarens Food and Wine Festival, and various art fairs, which draws large crowds.

10. The town experiences a cool climate with distinct seasons. Summers are mild with occasional thunderstorms, while winters can be cold, sometimes bringing snow to the surrounding mountains.

11. Due to its peaceful environment and stunning landscapes, Clarens is popular among retirees and people seeking a tranquil lifestyle.

12. The town retains a charming historical feel, with well-preserved sandstone buildings that add to its appeal.

13. Dinosaur fossils discovered near the town, particularly within the Clarens Formation of the Drakensberg Supergroup, date back around 200 million years to the early Jurassic period.

Notable finds include fossils of Massospondylus, an early herbivorous dinosaur that provides insights into the evolution of sauropods. In addition to skeletal remains, trace fossils like footprints have been uncovered, shedding light on dinosaur behavior and movement.

These discoveries make the area significant for paleontological research and add to Clarens’ appeal as a tourist destination, linking its picturesque landscape to a fascinating prehistoric past.
