David Derman Releases Cinematic New Single: “Stardust”

Cape Town-based singer-songwriter David Derman officially unveils his powerful and emotionally resonant new single, “Stardust”, hitting all major digital streaming platforms today.

Masterfully blending cinematic pop sensibilities with grounded indie-folk influences and a massive wave of anthemic energy, the track does something entirely unexpected.

David Derman

It transforms a dark, apocalyptic concept of a world on the absolute brink of total collapse into a soaring, triumphant celebration of human connection, unconditional love, and spiritual transcendence.

It stands as a defiant artistic statement proving that even when the physical structures around us crumble, the bonds we forge remain completely indestructible.

The track was written and sculpted alongside respected producer Aidin Nortje, and the duo managed to capture a massive, widescreen sonic atmosphere. “Stardust” leans into a grand, theatrical, and deeply uplifting sonic landscape that draws immediate, mouthwatering comparisons to the most celebratory musical moments found in The Greatest Showman.

Yet, beneath that vibrant, dance-driven pulse and infectious rhythm, the track maintains an exceptional amount of emotional depth. It forces the listener to look past the surface noise of everyday life and question what truly carries weight when the material world is stripped away entirely.

“I wrote ‘Stardust’ as an upbeat, passionate and cinematic pop/folk song that imagines the moment the world might be ending, and what truly matters when everything material falls away,” says David Derman when opening up about the core philosophy of his new work. “It’s about where you would go, and who you would run to, if everything else disappeared.”

David Derman is Exploring Shifting Skies, Transcendental Bonds, and Alternate Dimensions

Lyrically, the track is deeply rooted in fascinating, expansive themes of time, alternate dimensions, and transcendental love. It explores a profound human bond that manages to defy not only physical distance but the very fabric of existence itself.

David Derman paints a vivid, high-stakes background filled with systemic chaos – complete with shaking ground, shifting skies, and the haunting echo of distant sirens.

Yet, despite this overwhelming sensory environment of an impending apocalypse, the emotional core of the song remains entirely steadfast, capturing the absolute urgency of reaching the one person who grounds your universe.

This overwhelming sentiment is perfectly encapsulated in the track’s expansive, stadium-sized chorus, which delivers a powerful and poetic promise to the listener.

Even in the face of absolute cosmic collapse, the songwriting insists that genuine love doesn’t just survive; it adapts, breaks through barriers, and ultimately finds a way to manifest. It is this unwavering sense of hope that elevates the track from a standard love song into a larger-than-life pop anthem.

“I’ll break through walls of whatever world you’re calling from, it’s rainfall, stardust, in the moment I’m holding you,” David Derman sings, delivering the emotional climax of the track.

From Molecular Biology to Chart-Topping Independent Success

David Derman’s relationship with music is deep-seated, beginning at the tender age of just six years old when he sat watching his mother play Spanish guitar.

He carries a rich, multi-generational family lineage in music, which includes a great-grandfather who was a highly renowned conductor and accomplished multi-instrumentalist, making his artistic path feel almost inevitable.

His formative years spent honing his craft at Rondebosch Boys’ High further helped shape his live performance abilities, refined his creative voice, and gave him the confidence to begin writing his own narrative material.

David Derman first captured widespread national attention with his massive breakout single, “Old Friend”. That particular independent release soared all the way to the No. 1 spot on the Algoa FM Top 30 and dominated the 5FM SA Indie Chart for two consecutive weeks, while simultaneously invading the Top 10 on major regional stations like KFM and 947.

Finding its footing in raw storytelling, the track struck an immediate chord with a massive audience, earning him immense critical recognition and positioning him as one of South Africa’s most compelling emerging pop acts.

Beyond his obvious musical prowess, Derman’s background is incredibly multi-faceted. He possesses a remarkable academic journey, having successfully completed degrees in molecular biology, psychology, and a highly specialized Master’s degree in Wine Biotechnology.

Now, stepping entirely away from the laboratory and the lecture halls, he is turning his full, undivided focus toward releasing the massive body of musical work he quietly developed during his university years, stepping boldly into his true artistic calling.

Drawing strong creative influence from contemporary masters of storytelling like Ed Sheeran, Kaleo, Noah Kahan, and Ziggy Alberts, David Derman continues to prioritize narrative depth above all else.

David Derman’s growing catalog traverses complex themes of love, internal healing, and quiet introspection, completely resisting strict genre boundaries in favor of pure emotional authenticity.

With “Stardust” now out in the world, he offers alternative pop fans a much-needed moment of pure escape, reflection, and radical hope.
